IMO monogamy basically makes sense in competitive situations, it minimizes the number of people you have to trust to survive, and human history has been pretty competitive. Those rich minorities that have done polygamy were elevated enough to be able to escape a lot of the competitive pressure, though of course a lot of those relationships were also exploitative, just as you'd expect with the basis of their class position being exploitation. But it still may suggest that a socialist society, with generally less existential threats and more social trust, will naturally end up more poly.
