G1 really liked the stage one = one critter, stage two = three of them stapled together thing. Dugtrio and Magneton are precisely this, obviously. Doduo already had two heads and only added one to make a total of three rather than stitching three together. Sadly my idea for a Mega Dodrio having six heads was shot down by Game Freak. (I think there was a G/S beta baby Doduo with one head though?) Also Weezing's middle blob is definitely a vestigial head.

I'm still disappointed by Magnezone not somehow being even more Magnemites stuck together.

I've taken another look at beta baby Doduo and turns out he has more than one head. I think he should make a comeback anyway so we have more borbs. Rowlet, Hoothoot, and Natu need more friends, especially given that in Ultra SuMo Golfers specialise in borbs and had to make do with Minior instead.

Minior is great though, I loved catching them and cracking them open so I could get one of each colour.

Anyways here’s the local comm trade screen:

There's clearly the option to Wonder Trade SurpriseTrade so the "only shows up when you're online" doesn't seem right. Removing the GTS would be a very odd choice. It wasn't present in LGPE but LGPE also didn't have abilities and held items (or Wonder Trade). What a bizarre choice. I guess Friend Codes weren't restrictive enough.

I can see three possible explanations for why we can't see the GTS yet, and I don't think any of them are necessarily calls for alarm.

1. The option only appears if you're connected to the internet. Fair enough, because unlike the rest of those options (presuming 'surprise trade' is a revamped Wonder Trade or new feature of some kind that makes sense locally) the GTS is 100% pointless unless you're connected to the internet, so why bother showing it if you aren't?
2. Nintendo intend to patch it in after release, either in a day one patch or sometime maybe a month or so after release, to stop people from being able to destroy the game's balance literally from the starting gun. Since raid battles to unlock new Pokemon in the WIld Area are apparently a big thing, I can especially understand putting up that barrier to force people to play by those rules for a little while.
Or 3. They have some new way to do global trades that we're not aware of yet. This generation it feels like they're taking the opportunity to review a lot of the things previously considered sacred cows of a sort, it might just be that the GTS is one of them.

They wouldn't totally cut it, because that would be dumb, and while a bunch of people online seem to be convinced Game Freak became magically unable to make a Pokemon game over a single year, the fact is they're just not that stupid.

I mean that‘s a feature that should definitely really only be evaluated when people can actually go online but goddamn I hope they didn’t actually cut it because that would be insanely dumb

You'd think if it were option 2 that the facilities and menus for it in game would already be in place but the servers would just be offline until the official launch.

I got this for a Ratatta on GTS.

To be kind of honest, I barely used GTS during all of Gen 7, mostly because wondertrade was way more efficient to get rid of all my breeding rejects and there wasn't anything I particularly wanted.

Same here. I feel like in this gen there's not going to be as much of a need for breeding projects too with the nature candies and all the other conveniences.

Same, the only thing I used the GTS for was getting starters I didn't pick at the beginning, version exclusives, and trading Kadabra for Kadabra to get the dex entry etc. Even then, Wonder Trade usually got the first two fairly quickly, and I tended to prefer person-to-person trades for trade evos just so I didn't get traded a Graveller holding an Everstone :argh:

If they have gotten rid of the GTS that would be bizarre and definitely piss off more people, but I'd be personally more gutted if they'd gotten rid of Wonder Trade. It's also a great way to get foreign language dex entries!

I used the GTS extensively in generation 7. It's about the only way you can build an extensive "fashion ball" collection. If they remove the GTS, then that fun is largely over for me. I'll have to wait and see if this is the truth.

Lipstick Apathy
I got little use out of the GTS because even for a lot of simple things, people were making pretty ridiculous demands for trades. No, I'm not gonna give you a level 80 rare Pokemon for your breeding chaff. Just gimme the other starters I don't have!

Wonder trade was more fun even if you end up with a lot of low effort lv. 2-5 trash, because getting the occasional good and cool Pokemon is like cracking a chase rare out of a pack of magic cards or a mobage gacha. It's exciting!

I mostly used the GTS to plug up the actual holes in my Pokedex that I wasn't able to do any other way--version exclusives and, yeah, starters I didn't pick. I went REALLY hard on it in Y when I went for completing the Pokedex, it was a pretty painless way to get things I had no means to catch myself, which is less of a problem now that they've shaved down the Pokedex.

Wonder trading is absolutely a much more fun way to get the main 'distance' of completing your Pokedex, with the GTS only coming in when you've hit 'oh god I have three boxes of total garbage including several Dugtrios caught in Master Balls, and I'm still somehow missing a Solrock'. There's definitely ways you can improve the GTS, which is why I'm open to the idea that they might be delaying to ensure they get it right or figuring out an entirely new system.

I'm on the side of "there's no way they cut the GTS entirely", that would be extremely stupid. If they did actually do it, I'm going to be pissed since I used it extensively since Gen IV. (And my god it was so terrible back then. For one, if your Pokemon was in the queue for too long, it gets deleted.)

How would you trade if not through a GTS? There's no way they took out trading from the game period. Would you only be able to trade if you had friend codes?

If they were smart, Pokemon Home would be where all the breeding and competitive battling would take place so they can then use the games to actually show off new pokemon, gimmicks and story instead of half-assing that because they have to add in the next Battle Point Farming Simulator

Also why is Ivysaur screaming in pain here while Ash is grinning like a sadist?

One good trading QoL from Sw/Sh with Surprise Trade (wonder trade): So you select your pokemon and send it away and you get back to the game while the game resolves the trade in the background.

So would I but GF has made it clear that this is not what their goal is for the core series moving forward. Home being a proper platform for breeding / storing / battling / trading would give them the freedom to do whatever crazy poo poo they want with their games (like culling 60% of the dex) while still giving the players something to fall back on.

I too, quake for less content on a full price game so I can reclaim it later by buying seasons pass bullshit and locked out dlc. In fact just sell me an empty box, the game can come out later.

They’re literally already doing that without even giving you the option of a season pass and dlc so what the gently caress are you going on about.
