Like what is frustrating you? Your rebuttal was that the site filters out interesting movie when it's pretty easy to find access to reviews about Waves and The Lighthouse. And then your response was that you're mad that the fifth film in the Aliens series was called worth seeing and a boring but competent enough movie that you didn't like was also deemed worth seeing?

With a system like the Tomatometer "pretty good" is weighted on the same scale as "amazing", so you're rewarded for trying to appeal to the broadest possible audience in the safest manner, since it's better to have 9 out of 10 critics rate your movie as "pretty good" than only 2 or 3 rate it as "amazing" while risking more people rating it badly.

With Rotten Tomatoes arguably becoming the industry standard for judging film -- the tomato-rating shows up on a google search of any given film, and big films advertise the "fresh" rating and do dramatic reveals of the score -- this is going to incentivize more and more films to try to really nail "good enough" and not ever try for "great".

8 minutes could be an estimate. I'm guessing that's 8 minutes of unused scene footage from the previous movies. I know they're also using alternate takes/reworked previously used footage. The specific Rey hug is an alternate take and they're also reworking (clothes+background) of her goodbye to Rey from TFA.

For comparison about total time, she had about four minutes total in TFA.

Truly a damned shame there was never a good opportunity to send her character off while she was still alive, oh well.

So we all agree that this "repurposed footage" is just a PR cover for them doing more CGI necromancy to see if people notice, right

Given that it’s Disney, it’s probably yes. Which means yes.

And the more views RottenTomatoes receives, the more its “critical standard” is going to relax - which is loving disastrous for society in a way not measurable by market forces for a population ever increasingly accustomed to RT religiously determining what is “good” and what is “bad” for them. It’s almost like capitalism is destroying art and literacy for profit, boys!

I appreciate this effort post. But I take issue with this conclusion. I think why things are referenced are so often justified by very subjective reasoning. And then the judgement of whether that is a good enough reason to reference something is pretty arbitrary too. You might feel that they didn't earn it or whatever but, like, that's just your opinion man. I, and many others, don't think there is much wrong with referencing something because its cool. or because its a homage. or because the director wants to get all wanky and reference obscure classic cinema. the casino shot in canto blight is cool. and if you pick up the reference to Wings thats also cool. Maybe its OK to reference something for the sake of it? Maybe it doesn't have to allude to a theme or motif. You know? I know some people take references seriously and would rather have them be solved. But sometimes your expectations are what make the scene lame - not the dumbass gen x director going "wtf disney i don't know" and throwing in a bunch of easter eggs. Their line of reasoning was probably "well, Lucas definitely lifted from the films he grew up watching so lets just do that".

I've just written "maybe there for its own sake" is fine in way too many words.

One of Lucas’ rules for the EU was no time travel AFAIK. Wookipedia shows that there’s been like one instance and it was some portal force fuckery.

Yeah the number doesn't work if you're looking for a ranking of the films' quality and I don't know who the gently caress doesn't like Blade Runner, but that doesn't really matter. Nobody should be using RT to make stupid points about why their favorite Marvel movie is better than Gangs of New York or whatever.

Rotten Tomatoes presents their data in such way as to obfuscate what is lost in their quantification process. You can’t just say that people should already know that their numbers don’t work for assessing quality when RT actively uses their 0-100 scale scores to create ranking lists.

His Star Wars takes are good anyway.

"With Star Wars, product has not only taken the place of art; it has replaced myth."

"The Star Wars movies belong in the same category as Elvis Presley movies: They’re popular yet are all but unwatchable — except that the Presley pictures evince a human touch."

"Luke’s confrontation with Kylo on the red-salt tarmac only hints at the shock of bloodshed, and the centerpiece skirmish between Supreme Leader, Kylo, and Rey — the film’s visual highpoint — features only rote gymnastics. You cannot have seen any Chinese martial arts or Zack Snyder movies if you are impressed by this. Johnson’s backdrop is a stunning red cyc wall that goes up in flames, revealing nothing. Psyche."

When Prometheus came out I was underemployed. I came home around noon from work and thought “Hey, why not see a movie? It’s hot out and a well air conditioned theater would be nice.” So I got really stoned and went to the theater. I was one of maybe 3 people there. I can honestly say that I enjoyed the movie. I can also honestly say that I was pretty high too. If we can’t get stoned and watch a dumb sci-fi movie, what else is there in the world?
