I like the wick movies but the bad guys all have guns and yet they approach John Wick to within three feet so he can fight them instead of shooting him from a distance, which is what guns are meant to do

Actual good total product, no, not really. And Jupiter Ascending is the worst of it.

This is not the "unpopular opinions" thread, but people are talking about it so: I didn't like Speed Racer. At all. Also Jupiter Ascending could have been a fun little film if they had leaned less on the world-building, and more on the fact that it was a YA wish fulfilment movie about a girl who finds out she is s superduper superspecial space princess. I apologize for my bad opinions. To add an unrelated subtle movie moment. In Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave, when Gromit is in prison reading his copy of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dogstoyefsky, (haha a dog pun), on the spine of the book we can see it is a penguin classic edition. I've never seen any of the John Wick movies and have heard they're good but jesus christ is the whole movie just some guy basically doing a mass shooting except he's ostensibly the hero and doing it artistically so now it's Cool? I watched that clip someone posted and did not like it. Holy poo poo I don't want to watch anything like that for 2 hours no matter how sympathetic the dude's cause might be. gently caress almighty it just looks like bullet/gun fetish porn. Is there more to it? I feel the same way about the Fast and Furious movies because from what I can tell it's just car chases and Dudes Being Cool Going Fast (And loving Hot Chicks) and have also never seen any of those just out of a general lack of interest. Cracking up at too at John Wick and F&F movies coming up in the subtle movie moments thread. These movies don't look subtle but maybe I'm missing out on something. Am I missing anything or have I got these films about pegged? Seriously not trying to sound like a film snob and I like good action movies but god drat from the clips and discussions I'm just nope.

john wick (1) is about an apostate assassin in an alternate world where assassins control society thats dragged back into the game when a mob boss’s punk kid kills a puppy that wick’s dead wife posthumously gave to him so he would have something to keep him tethered to reality......its a really good movie with lots of pathos and a very strong setting fast and furious started off as car chases but now its a superhero heist movie franchise where blue collar bruisers wear fancy cars to fight international terrorists john wick can be subtle but usually isnt. fast and furious is only ever accidentally subtle

the john wick sequels are terrible because they have to come up with new motivations since they cant just kill his dog every time, and the new motivations are very flimsy in the case of 2 and nonexistent in the case of 3

Oh I forgot to mention, This isn't exactly subtle, but more just fun interpretation John Wick uses sign language a little in the second film I use (my country's) sign language in my day job and I can say with some degree of authority that Keanu signs and woodenly as he acts

Jupiter Ascending just tried to do way too much. It reminds me of Chronicles of Riddick but worse. At least with Riddick there were clear stakes and the villain had an obvious goal. Jupiter just threw together aliens, royalty, genetic engineering, grav boots, invisibility, uhhhh.... immortal capitalist elves and... dog boy the boy who shoots lasers.

Is there more to it? John Wick (especially as it goes on) is fundamentally Fight Choreography: The Movie. It's very good at being that though, so if you enjoy fight choreography/cinematography, it's very good (e.g. the fight in the hall of mirrors at the end of II is both visually interesting and 'how did they film this without crew being visible' interesting). Fast and Furious I is literally a remake of Point Break with cars instead of surfing Fast and Furious II is a generic 80's action movie made in 2003 Fast and Furious III is the Karate Kid but with cars instead of karate Fast and Furious IV+ are superhero movies where everyone's superpower is CAR, and CAR can solve all problems somehow.

The other two Riddick movies kind of spoil the arc he has in Pitch Black, but seriously, I really rate PB. It's a great story of if not redemption, then at least trying to atone in some small way.

If anything Reeve‘s acting is more realistic because Wick actually is hearing. (This should go in the pet peeves thread: any show/movie where they have hearing people play deaf people. It always looks like poo poo)
