MizPiz posted:They could be working on medical nanomachines or something like that That's an entirely different discipline. Further, cancer isn't a single disease with a single cause, it's a dizzying spectrum of disorders with as many causes as there are permutations. Look, that tweet got under my skin because it uses the same loving logic that causes boomers to bitch about their tax dollars being spent on schools that their kids don't go to. We don't have to concentrate our efforts on just one thing!

zoux posted:Oh, you're going to die on this hill then, well enjoy that. It's a lovely, dumb joke and I hear my dumbass coworkers and the people I help make similar statements on a daily basis. "Why are we wasting time on fighting global warming when we still have cancer?" "Why are we going to space when we have gun violence?" "Why are people upset about capitalism when Trump is president?" "Why root out political corruption when the Democrats/Republicans do [bad thing] too?" Like, this may be an irrational annoyance, but I hear this every loving day. It's ignorance at best and poor faith arguing at worst.

I think it’s fine to use “cure cancer” as a shorthand for “solve hard and important problem” without a robust rubric for comparing the topic at hand to actual oncology. Given that the media will lead with the story of “cute puppy, but robot!” and not “this is a step to better understanding of non-verbal mechanical expressions which are necessary for employing robots to assist with home care”, it’s easy to feel like it’s the scientific equivalent of someone spending a life-changing amount of money on a baseball card at auction. Decrying people for having their understanding of the (non-)portability of capabilities across scientific disciplines lag their exposure to photogenic results doesn’t seem appropriate or helpful. (The people in question probably could have made some contributions to cancer research instead if they’d chosen that path, if not necessarily groundbreaking ones, but I’m not sure there’s a useful moral framework under which they should be compelled to do so.) That said, it’s an excusable tweet, but far from a good one.

I used to know a perfectly intelligent and well educated person but then they heard a joke about the appropriation and direction of scientific funding and now they're a complete moron.
