They want to associate the word fake to the word whistleblower, so that they can keep saying this is all a sham started by fake news. For anyone who has a brain and can think it won’t work, but there is a vast amount of people in the us who are “not political” and seriously go out of their way to avoid politics. Those are the ones that are gonna see news clips about the fake whistleblower and fake process and they don’t/wont have the mental capacity or curiosity or willpower to think about it and accept it at face value because it’s easier. And the republicans are way better at making loud noises so it might work.

"Luxury" is a buzzword but it is absolutely not aimed at investors. It used to be perhaps but somewhere in the last decade or so some realtor somewhere slipped it into the listing for a lovely flip, saw it get a lot of attention, and everyone else dogpiled on.

Now the term as used by just about everyone complaining about the housing mix being built is just standard bullshit copy trying to hype up properties in hope that someone will spend $100/month more because the builder spent an extra $50 for the stainless steel finish on the appliances. There's actually a lot of hand-wringing in the real estate world that the word has lost all meaning with buyers (and renters). A lot of "everyone else ruined the word which I and I alone used responsibly :qq:"

Yeah the best test for 'is it ~luxury~?' is to look at how many rooms. 1-2 bed and 1.5 bath, not luxury, no matter how nice the appliances and countertops are. 3 bed 2.5/3 bath not luxury. 5 bed 4 bath probably not luxury, probably for either a bunch of kids or with a guest/parent or adult child space. Now that last one for a single person would be a ton, but 1-3 bed stuff, even if it's a nice place is just basic dwelling poo poo that would have to be incredibly opulent to be considered luxury.

Luxury as an actual small percentile marker of something above and beyond is much more about huge garages, shop space, a study/workout/play room/other niche single-purpose rooms (like lmfao if a place has a theater or some poo poo), etc. a bedroom being used as an office space doesn't really count here. Low key, roomy bathrooms and kitchens with a ton of extra counter space are two really reliable markers of a place built with fewer constraints

Luxury as a listing term just means there's at least one or two conspicuous, nicer features that generally are a time capsule of whatever is trendy of the year of construction.

There is a bit of a trend developing to downsell people who want big boomer houses into buying something practical (eg 3-4 bed, without a bunch of weird extraneous single use poo poo added on) because the entire new house market is people trying to buy 3-4 bed houses to raise kids in. Even dinks normally want bedroom+office/craft/project space+guest room. People in the market for fancy 5+ bedroom places are almost always going to just build something to their taste than get some 20+ year old 90s mcmansion.

Prester Jane posted:

The entire argument IP was making is that the lack of supply in housing is a direct result of perverse incentives for housing development- perverse incentives which are exemplified by the market distortion inherent;^ caused by building lots of high-end investment properties that no one lives in.

categorically this is not the case, at all. The ultra rich distort the market, but definitionally, they are an extremely tiny, tiny percentile of people buying housing and they have nearly zero impact on the housing market that people making under 300k/year are engaging with. Also worth noting that a lot of the various shades of extremely wealthy live in places that aren't especially fancy.

Like the best way to describe how completely the two are unrelated: it's like the market for super-yachts impacting the market for 14' aluminum lake boats

They’re hoping that if they scream about unfairness enough and throw enough shade (warranted or not) on a more well known (at least as, “The Whistleblower”) witness that people will decide that maybe they aren’t full of poo poo.

There's basically a few fatal flaws in their plan:
1) Trump already released the (edited) Transcript which was hilariously damning and made the Whistleblower a non issue
2) Trump doesn't know how to shut up and let himself fade out of public conscious
3) Trump's basically hit the hard floor of his popularity and everyone has an opinion of him (mostly negative)
4) It the GOP so long to come up with a semi-coherent plan that they're fighting against a fairly entrenched narrative.

I think the difference is space and location. People don’t wanna live out in the suburbs, they wanna live in the cities. Yeah you can get an abandoned 8 bedroom 6 bath for super cheap in Maricopa but why would you? (I know people who “invested” in housing there of all places and lol.)

It was not a unique thing there. The issue is that 'luxury homes' or 'luxury apartments' increases the cost of building them by maybe 5-10% but can command a much higher price so for the purpose of return on investment it's a no brainier.

All of those houses sat empty because thanks to the housing bubble they had a book value far higher than the market value and the banks holding them didn't want to recognize that loss by selling them for the proper price. Until they went to auction and A) had been abandoned for likely months at that point without maintenance and B) were probably sold to speculators or in many cases rental groups.

Greenwald is a good faith actor who has a huge blind spot for the authoritarian right in the US right now. To whatever extent he provides cover for the Trump administration, it’s because he’s a dyed in the wool contrarian who hates being aligned with the dominant narrative, especially when it involves trusting government evidence. He has a lot of incredibly dumb and harmful opinions about our current political situation, but he’s a natural and articulate ally of the left on many other issues. He’s also a fearless, legitimate journalist.

Andy Ngo is an alt-right propagandist and agitator who actively coordinates with white nationalist groups to instigate confrontations with leftist counter-protestors and selectively edits the resulting footage to make antifa look like violent thugs. He then distributes that footage with his own false narrative of events and claims the mantle of objective journalism. Oh, and he also doxxes left-wing protestors to intimidate and create safety concerns for them.

Glenn Greenwald gets poo poo on for good reason in this thread, but Andy Ngo doesn’t even belong in the same sentence.

In Colorado Springs around 2005 or so they projected like 50k - 100k new soldiers and Airman were going to be moving to the city due to Base Realignment and Closures. Developers built absurdly big sub division's of small, but really loving expensive houses (my friends house was around 1200 sq ft, 2 bed, 2 bath and was like $250k). Those Soldiers and Airman never came to the city so it was a double whammy when financial crisis started. My friend moved from CoS in 2007 and it took him to years to sell his house and at a major final loss to him and his wife.
