i like that this guy, a bolivian living in the united states with extensive ties to bolivia but who recognizes that their centrist family is just spouting bullshitSpice World War II posted:She, and a lot of other Bolivians, might greatly enjoy their ethnostate; after all, plenty of people were fine with it pre-Morales, too. Three quarters of my family live in various cities in Bolivia. Not everyone in the opposition is a full on cosplaying Nazi, but you have to be willfully blind to not notice the cosplaying Nazi type is part of it just by going to social media, and they have such a long and proud tradition too! You have to be even more willfully blind to claim that it took the hundreds of jubilant facebook posts and tweets of "democratic opposition" accounts filming themselves taking down, burning or ripping wiphalas of their uniforms for you to notice that a very ugly anti-indigenous sentiment has been a part of the opposition basically from the day Morales took office. Hell, plenty of them promised to do just that publically well in advance!. got completely ignored

pro-coup police and military have apparently been responding mostly with rubber bullets and other 'less-lethal' weapons but in at least one instance so far they opened fire with live ammunition, wounding several people and killing at least one. Morales' supporters are so far basically unarmed, there's been some pretty heavy clashes but for the most part they're just using sticks and rocks and other improvised implements.

I came to this thread to read up on what's going on because my Latin American Politics professor a decade ago hated Morales and I know that I have a lot of gaps in my Bolivia knowledge. But I stayed for the OP which is a masterpiece. This thread is beautiful.

I wonder why people would be suspicious of this military coup? Since military coups in Latin America have always been done with the best intentions and with zero foreign influence at all.

I'm not sure what your specific criticism of the military is, as far as I'm aware the only way its gotten involved so far was by releasing a statement. Of course there must have been a lot of maneuvering in the background but there's no way for us to know what happened at this time. In crises like these when one part of the government is blatantly violating laws and norms there's never going to be an easy solution.

good to know that of all the things that are BAPPIN a coup is not one of them. it’s just the Military going one by one through the line of succession making everybody resign until somebody agreeable to them takes power. Not a coup. Totally different.

Kinda Interesting that there was basically a chain of "Ilhan Omar calls it a coup" -> "AOC calls it a coup" -> "Bernie calls it a coup." Seems like it might be a water testing media strategy.

I remember a couple of months ago there was a paper published by economists saying that there were always these bumps in stock in CIA-affiliated companies just before a coup, even without the coup not having happened yet, just because of the expectation of making money off of it
