I did not know that this was a thing. Now the evil option in that quest makes a lot more sense than stealing medicine from a dying child just to get a super stimpak. Hopefully it won't be a problem, since Nate already has more than 250 HP.

On the way back to Diamond City, Nate spots another Super Mutant Suicider detonation.

He watches a three-way battle between mutants, robots, and scavengers, then sends in Curie to kill the surviving greenskins so he can loot all of the bodies.

Miss Edna is marrying the schoolteacher Mr. Zwicky. The people of Diamond City may hate Synths, but Pastor Clements is happy to marry a man and a robot.

Nate heads to Park Street Station in search of Detective Valentine. Along the way, a legendary radroach tries to eat his face.

They find a dead body and Curie wants to file a police report. Nate empties the corpse's pockets and finds a note warning to stay away from Boston Common, the place where they found the body.

Park Street Station turns out to be full of mobsters, so Nate sends Curie in to fight.

Unfortunately Curie doesn't cope well with being surrounded, and she's particularly vulnerable to rapid-fire weapons. Nate has to clear the room himself before Curie can self-repair.

Curie does manage to slip through the narrow turnstile and move downstairs in the subway station.

There are too many Triggermen to charge in with a shotgun, so Nate and Curie fight from a distance with her lasers and his rifle.

Curie is not happy with the cleanliness of the subway station. The mobsters are in for it now.

The darkness and many obstacles makes it easy for Nate to rush in with his shotgun, to the close range where he can overpower just about any other weapon.

Muscles-for-brains was too busy taunting the detective to notice an armoured man walking up with a shotgun. Even without ever sneaking, NPCs are terrible at spotting Nate.

Level 14 perk: Strength +1 (Now 5)
It's good to get some extra strength while carrying around 20 pounds of shotgun shells.

Nate arrives in the old Overseer's office to save Nick.

He's never seen one of the old robotic-looking Synths before, so Nick's appearance is a bit of shock.

Curie, meanwhile, is shocked at the surface world's level of violence. A craftier man could have settled down on a purified water farm somewhere, but that's not how Nate likes to do things.

At the vault entrance, Skinny Malone and his new girlfriend confront Nate and his robotic rabble.

Nate manages to convince Darla to go back home instead of fighting to the death.

She's sure to be swayed by Nate's overwhelming charm, and runs away.

Skinny and Nick have a long history, which is why this armed confrontation can end peacefully. Fighting three men with Tommy guns in close quarters is not the best plan for staying alive.

The mob boss counts to 10 before he starts shooting, which gives ample time to run away. Curie is happy that Nate smooth-talked his way into a peaceful solution.

Level 15 perk: Bloody Mess 2 (Level 9, 3 Luck)
I've collected most of the relevant perks for this build already, so I'm looking at either gaining strength, or spending 5 perk points to get a throwing arc for grenades, or 8 points to reload guns 35% faster.

While Nick returns to Diamond City, Nate and Curie go to the nearby town of Goodneighbour to unload some loot. Nate sees some scary enemies: Two legendary Super Mutant Skirmishers as well as three regular Super Mutants. He sends in Curie, who gets taken down after killing one mutant, and then charges while the greenskins are still distracted.

One of the legendary mutants accidentally shot a regular mutant to death. Ironically, the skirmisher was carrying a mutant slayer's pistol. It's not a good weapon, but it'll sell for 75 caps.

Nate gets rid of the short combat rifle and buys a new backup weapon in Goodneighbour: This boosted laser rifle with a tactical sight. It deals almost as much damage as a combat rifle, with longer range. If he finds himself under attack and unable to run up to shotgun range, this gun will do the job.

Nate follows the rumours and hears that Bobbi No-Nose is hiring - "Always a catch with the No-Nose, but she pays." He also gets told to meet a fellow mercenary named MacCready, who is currently being warned by some Gunners to stop working in their territory.

MacCready is available for hire. Unfortunately, I think Curie isn't viable for this Inspirational strategy and Nate needs a follower who can use actual weapons. So, should Nate team up with MacCready, Preston, Piper, or Nick?

Should Nate work on Nick Valentine's next case, Bobbi No-Nose's mysterious job, Edward Deegan's dangerous contract, the Brotherhood distress signal, or follow the Freedom trail?

On the way back to Diamond City, Nate and Curie witness a three-way battle between raiders, Super Mutants, and Synths, then kill the surviving raiders. One of them had a legendary double-barrelled shotgun with +25% damage, but the staggering combat shotgun remains the better weapon. He picks up a distress signal from a man captured by Super Mutants at Trinity Tower.

Level 16 perk: Strength +1 (Now 6)

There's a small raider camp right next to Diamond City, so Curie goes in to clear it.

Nate helped kill some stragglers, but Curie did most of the fighting.

They arrive at Valentine's Detective Agency at the exact same moment as Nick. (No matter how long it takes Nate to get there, Nick will have just gotten home)

Nick tells Nate about a mercenary who lived in Diamond City until recently: Kellogg. A brutal man even by mercenary standards, rumoured to work for the Institute. Now, he's gone.

The lock on Kellogg's door proves almost impossible to pick.

At the Mayor's office, Nate is unable to charm the secretary into giving up the key to Kellogg's house. (It's a hard speech check, so Nate has only an 85% chance to pass it.) So, he bribes her.

Nate strips Kellogg's house of valuables, then presses a big red button under his desk to see what happens.

It leads to a secret room loaded with ammo, rations, and a recently-smoked cigar. Nate asks Nick to follow him as they track down the mercenary.

Dogmeat, who lives in Sanctuary Hills, turned out to be right outside for some reason. So Nate uses him to track the scent on the cigar.

Dogmeat, Curie, and Nick all in one place. If only more than one person could ever accompany Nate to do anything.

Level 17 perk: Strong Back (6 Strength)
Strong Back lets Nate carry an extra 25 pounds. Since he's carrying 20 pounds of shotgun shells, and Nick is carrying 30 pounds of tommy gun magazines, it comes in handy to not have to make sacrifices when bringing supplies on missions.

The people of Diamond City are glad to see Detective Valentine is back, and more or less in one piece.

Dogmeat leads the way, tracing a path into the Commonwealth. They meet a lot of hostile animals along the way, as if Kellogg were trying to make it harder to follow him. Nick's explosive submachine gun can kill mole rats in a single burst.

They run into a tightly-packed group of Super Mutants, and Nick blows them away with his gun. Dogmeat is able to grab one of them by the leg and knock it down, so Nate can finish it off with Justice.

Look how proud he is to find another one of Kellogg's empty beer bottles! Such a well-behaved dog that Nate randomly found at a gas station a week ago.

A group of destroyed robots shows that Kellogg is an extremely dangerous man. Nate can still talk to this decapitated Assaultron, which confirms that it was destroyed by Kellogg.

It's a long journey, but Dogmeat eventually leads Nate and Nick to a prewar military compound, with the main door completely sealed up.

It's covered in machine gun turrets, which are easily destroyed at range with a laser rifle.

Some Minutemen nearby are badly outnumbered and fighting a losing battle against raiders, so Nate rushes over to help out before returning to the fort.

Level 18 perk: Rifleman 3 (Level 18, 2 Perception)

After finding a way in at the top of the Fort, Nate discovers it is full of hostile Synths. He proceeds to utterly defeat the first wave of attackers by hiding in a bathroom while Nick shoots them.

The Spray 'n Pray is especially effective against Synths, capable of blasting limbs off with every shot.

Nate activates a friendly Protectron, and it turns out to be legendary. It's too slow to be any use fighting Synths, and eventually it turns on Nate and tries to shoot him. He blows it up with the shotgun, and the radiation forces him to use a Radaway, making him feel tired. He chugs Nuka-Cola instead of sleeping, to make use of the 50% damage bonus from adrenaline.

Nick fights his way through the fortress as Nate lags behind. The detective only needs a stimpak once, after Nate accidentally shoots him in the back of the head.

This is how they proceed through Fort Hagen, destroying dozens of Synths in the process. Nick can also use his hacking skills to unlock terminals and shut down laser turrets rather than fighting. Kellogg taunts them as they advance, then eventually starts ordering them to turn back. Playing this way makes Nate genuinely feel like a mercenary fighting for Nick, instead of the game normally feeling like everyone else is useless at fighting.

Nate finds the password to the armory and breaks in, finding a Fat Man portable atom bomb launcher, and one Mini Nuke.

Kellogg walks in with his hands up like a sucker, claiming he wants to talk. Nate gets up close and blows him away. Kellogg is tough, and it takes six shots from Justice to kill him.

All of Kellogg's Synths start shooting as Nate turns and runs back down the hallway. Nick fires his one Mini Nuke and kills every Synth in the room except himself. Nate is completely immune to any damage from his companion, so he's fine.

Kellogg is dead. Nate finds he was full of cybernetic parts, barely even human anymore. The Synths and the dead man's computer confirm that he worked for the Institute. Diamond City has felt under siege by the Institute for years, but no one knows where the Institute is.

They return to Diamond City to ask Piper if she knows how to find the Institute. She says that only someone with access to the Institute, like Kellogg, would know. Nate says, "We could talk to him. Feel like holding a seance?"

Nick says there's another way. He knows a doctor in Goodneighbour who helps people view their own memories. She may be able to extract information from Kellogg's cybernetic brain implant.

Nate resupplies in Diamond City, but isn't able to buy more Mini Nukes at the moment. There are a few missiles for sale. In addition to the Spray 'n Pray for routine fighting, should he get his companion to use the Fat Man or Missile Launcher or neither?

What's next? Continue Nick's investigation, meet the Brotherhood, follow the Freedom Trail, save Rex Goodman from Super Mutants, do Edward Deegan's contract, or work for Bobbi No-Nose?

It's Halloween! Nate and the detective go for a spooky walk to Goodneighbor to work for Bobbi.

There was a booby-trapped missile launcher near the spot where Nate ambushed the chems deal. Missiles weigh 7 pounds each, so Nick can only carry a few at a time.

Level 19 perk: Inspirational 2 (Level 19, 8 Charisma)
This gives companions a small boost in damage resistance, and makes it so that Nate can't hurt them while wildly blasting with Justice.

A Super Mutant with a missile launcher blows up Nate a little bit, but Nick is ready to fire back. The Mutant was carrying a hefty supply of missiles, and the team picks up all they can carry.

Nick can't damage Nate, or himself, with the missile launcher. Nate uses him to solve problems by ordering him to walk up to any possible threats to see whether they'll start shooting at him. Nick takes several seconds to aim the missile launcher, but he's surprisingly accurate with it.

They find the secretive Bobbi No-Nose and she's paying up front for this job. Nate haggles his value up to 200 caps.

Bobbi explains the job: Manual labour to dig a tunnel. Within five seconds of joining the other diggers, they break through a wall into a chamber full of mirelurks and Nate becomes a hired gun. The other two men run off, and Bobbi says she'll have to find a friend of hers in Diamond City to help them dig farther.

On the way to Diamond City, Nick kills a legendary raider with one explosion.

The thrill of killing raiders leads Nate into the Combat Zone, where Nick proceeds to kill everyone using an armload of missiles.

I went with Cait in the last attempt, so I'm going to let her stay in the Combat Zone. However, Nate can't ignore her corset that grants +14 HP, so he takes it and gives Cait some clothing from a dead audience member.

Bobbi has avoided Diamond City's ban on ghouls by wearing the clever disguise of a mask over her face. Clearly the guards don't actually care about the no-ghouls law. She explains the job: Breaking into Mayor McDonough's strongroom. Bobbi has an accomplice in Diamond City's jail and she tells Nate to bust him out by any means necessary.

So, Nate politely asks if the guards will release Mel from prison. It turns out he was only one day away from finishing his sentence, so the guard shrugs and releases the man ahead of schedule.

Mel mentions the time he got radiation poisoning while trying to tunnel into a vault with Bobbi. Because Bobbi's a ghoul, she's immune to radiation.

Malcom Latimer, the father of that guy Nate killed and robbed, confronts him about the younger Latimer's murder. Nate denies it and blames Marowski the chem dealer. Malcom falls for it, but Nick Valentine can tell that Nate is lying. He doesn't like that, and he also doesn't like it when Nate offers his services as a mercenary to kill Marowski in retaliation. Marowski lives in the heart of Goodneighbor, so it would be tough to kill him without needing to kill the whole town, but there's no time limit on the job.

Back to Goodneighbor. The missile launcher blows up an entire raider ambush easily.

Mel introduces Sonya, his flying robot that uses sonar pulses to rapidly dig through soft earth. Bobbi tells him that Nate is good in a fight, so he'll be the one fighting anything dangerous they might dig up.

Nick prefers to use his weapon with the highest damage output - Nate can order him to change weapons, but eventually he'll switch back to the missile launcher as long as he as ammo. Nate acts fast to stop the detective from wasting a missile on tiny mirelurk hatchlings.

They dig into a subway tunnel full of ferals. Bobbi is offended when Mel shouts "Ghouls!" and he corrects himself to "Feral ghouls! The bad ones!"

Level 20 perk: Lifegiver 3 (Level 20, 3 Endurance)
Another boost to survivability, and constant slow healing outside of combat. This will save the occasional bottle of water when Nate isn't hurt badly enough to justify using healing items.

The dig continues. Nick runs out of missiles and switches back to the explosive tommy gun. The squad easily guns down legendary ghouls and a high-level putrid glowing one.

Finally, they arrive under the strongroom. Mel tells them all to back up as Sonya prepares a powerful blast into the ceiling.

The collapsing cavern destroys Sonya, and Mel is distraught. Bobbi tries to cheer him up by talking about how much loot they're about to get.

They climb into the room and are confronted by Goodneighbor's toughest bodyguards. It turns out Bobbi lied to everyone, and this scheme was going to burglarize Mayor Hancock, not the ghoul-hating mayor of Diamond City.

To survive in the Commonwealth, sometimes you need to know when to fold 'em. Nate lowers his gun, and convinces Bobbi to lower hers as well. Fahrenheit thanks him, and gives him Ashmaker, a legendary minigun that lights things on fire. It's a terrible weapon because the fire damage doesn't stack, but it's worth a lot of caps as soon as Nate can haul it to a merchant.

Level 21 perk: Strong Back 2 (Level 10, 6 Strength)
This perk shows up just in time to let Nate carry all of his legendary loot back to Goodneighbor. He has over 10,000 caps at this point, but some of the game's best items cost that much.

Valentine describes Hancock as fair and brutal in equal measure. He loves justice, and he believes in the quick deaths of the unjust. Nate pays a visit to apologize for busting open the strongroom.

Fortunately, the mayor is grateful that Nate peacefully backed out of the strongroom, and offers to travel with Nate. Hancock is just as brave and aggressive as Nick, somewhat tougher, and like all human followers he can wear the sprinter's armour to match Nate's running speed.

Should Nate stick with Detective Valentine, or switch to Mayor Hancock?

For his next job, should Nate pick Kellogg's brain for Nick, introduce himself to the Brotherhood, follow the Freedom Trail, go to Trinity Tower to save Rex, or be a hired gun for Edward Deegan? Also, you can vote a quest off the list if you don't want Nate to do it.

Hancock gathers the people of Goodneighbor for a going-away speech. Nick tells him to stay out of trouble, to which he replies "You know I don't make promises I won't keep."

The Vault-Tec rep from before the war is still alive in Goodneighbor! He tells Nate about the dreadful year he spent living with Codsworth before looking for people who could actually hold a conversation. This town isn't for him, so the talkative salesman feels lonely. Nate tells him he could live in Sanctuary, so the ghoul decides to move - Hancock is annoyed that his town has lost a citizen, but he won't say anything against it.

Some gunners try to extort passage across the river. Nate blasts one at close range, and Hancock kills the other two with Spray 'n Pray. They stop at Bunker Hill briefly, where Nate buys some better armour - he gets the Black Ops chestpiece, with 29 damage resistance and +1 to Strength and Endurance.

It's a long walk to the Brotherhood airship, but it's only a short swim across the river. With Aquaboy, nothing can threaten Nate in the water, so it's a safe way to travel the Commonwealth.

Nate and Hancock swim ashore in the middle of a raider camp. Hancock's bullets set off two nuclear cars, which explode and kill most of the raiders. The explosive gun will set off a lot of larger explosions, which is a double-edged sword because Nate has to be careful around them.

The Brotherhood won't let Nate see their cool airship until he goes to help the recon squad that has been sending a distress signal for weeks. You'd think the Brotherhood would have noticed by now. They're very rude to Hancock because he's a ghoul, and a fight almost breaks out between him and the guard.

Anyway, it's a trek across all of North Boston to Cambridge Police Station. Along the way they'll fight mutated bears, ghouls, and raiders, with Hancock exploding cars all the way.

They find a man held at gunpoint by another man who looks identical. Both claim to be the real Art, having been copied by an Institute Synth.

Nate convinces the standing Art to lower his gun. The kneeling Art then draws a pistol and tries to kill the three armed gunmen facing him, and dies. Checking his body confirms that he was a Synth.

The real Art tries to get to safety, but walks into a raider ambush. Nate and Hancock kill them all in revenge. Hancock likes Nate's helpful nature, and avenging an innocent man's death.

A shadowy cathedral contains a lone figure praying at the altar. When Nate steps closer, the figure starts shooting, and feral ghouls emerge from the darkness.

The pastor was a ghoul. There's nothing in the church to explain exactly why he decided to remain with his doomed congregation.

In Diamond City, Becky's store finally has the best clothing in the game, the green shirt and combat boots. That means it's Hancock's turn to wear the corset, which is the second-best piece of clothing.

They arrive at the police station, where Hancock uses his gun to once again explode a nearby car. It's a wonder so many of those volatile mini reactors have lasted this long.

Level 22 perk: Solar Powered (10 Endurance)
This perk provides a good boost health and strength, but only in direct sunlight.

Paladin Danse recruits Nate to help the Brotherhood retrieve a long-range transmitter from a nearby scientific facility.

Hancock prefers the Spray 'n Pray over the missile launcher, but he will use the missiles when asked.

When they are attacked by a group of Synths, Hancock kills them all with a well-placed explosion.

Nate goes into the observation room in the basement and restores power to the elevator. A dozen Synths start swarming Paladin Danse.

Hancock could probably win this fight on his own, but they might as well spare the missiles. Nate seals up the observation room and pushes the big red button to fire the engine and cook the oncoming Synths.

Nate hangs back and lets the other two fighters storm the final room. Danse kills all the remaining Synths before Hancock can even aim the missile launcher.

The Paladin isn't happy with the way the mission went, but he still offers Nate a position in the Brotherhood. They love technology and they hate ghouls, Synths, and Super Mutants.

Level 23 perk: Perception +1 (Now 3)
Perception will lead to some good perks eventually, like better lockpicking and increased explosives damage.

As Hancock points out, joining them isn't a decision to be made lightly. Nate says he'll think about it.

Should Nate join the Brotherhood or not?

What's next? Help the Brotherhood, follow the Freedom Trail, Edward Deegan's contract, or Nick Valentine's case?
