So whatever I'm doing is probably pointless but I've been doing my own trials of Link's Awakening with my own set of limitations over the usual any% 1. No glitches 2. No stealing. All major purchases (shovel, bow, frog song) acquired through routing money pickups into the run 3. All dungeons including the Color Dungeon. Best routes possible. Split Dungeon 4 to delete the ghost quest 4. Save/Reload skips in dungeons 5. Trading quest completed properly to check the book for Wind Fish's Egg I'm down to about 2h35m in my last recorded run but I just figured out a faster route through the 8th dungeon. That new route lets me complete D8 in 10 minutes flat instead of 13-ish so I'm excited to record a new run and hopefully with better boss RNG and maybe get down to the 2h30m range Edit: Recorded run VoD here at about 1h31m - https://www.twitch.tv/videos/499691487 ProjektorBoy fucked around with this message at 07:48 on Oct 29, 2019 |

As someone who helps organize multiple events yearly I totally get it. This stuff is hard, time consuming and draining. Still kinda bummed out since puwp events are my favorite ones to take part in these days, the atmosphere is just so much fun. You won't see stuff like "congrats on topping that big gay mountain" in chat anywhere else

So Ocarina of Time has been broken open again. Stale reference manipulation has opened up the game to arbitrary code execution.

Is Arbitrary Code Execution that thing where Pokemon players gently caress around in the menu so hard they reprogram it into running Tetris?

Right now the OoT ACE can only run like one arbitrary execution per save file though, their demo shows that's barely enough to change some inventory items. I'm sure they'll break it wide open later on, but now it's a bit weak as far as ACEs go.

YggiDee posted:Is Arbitrary Code Execution that thing where Pokemon players gently caress around in the menu so hard they reprogram it into running Tetris? Yes. Specifically, the "arbitrary code" part is "writing your own program for the console independent of any code that exists in the game already", and the "execution" part is "tricking the game into loading and executing the program you wrote". Usually, this requires finding a way to glitch the game into trying to execute code from RAM instead of ROM, then finding a way to aim that at a section of RAM you control (e.g. player name, inventory contents, position in game world, etc), then controlling that to either run the code you want (for simple stuff), or load the real program from somewhere else (if what you want is too big/complicated to do that way) -- e.g. the pokemon ACE TAS, where the initial code they trick it into executing is just a program loader that reads program code from the controller, and then the TAS does controller inputs super fast to write out the rest of the program.
