I’ll be fair and put that blame on the way trailers are cut, which always seem to gently caress up the sync in some way or other. Otherwise... eh? They’ve been pushing the fact that they’re going for movie quality animation, and you know in some ways this looks fine, if nothing special. I can see this going in between 2019 Grinch and like Horton heads a Who on the “Modern Dr. Seuss Animation Adaptations” scale. I guess at least it doesn’t look like it’ll be a Lorax?

I mean, the animation looks fine to me. But it does not look "the most expensive animated program"-good. Five to six million dollar an episode. That's like 5k for each second. Maybe there are more concrete numbers by now.
Of course, it pales in comparison to cinema releases, but there are some really pretty animations around.

It kinda reminds me of late Disney 2D movies. There's all that CGI in the background, and it's really easy to piss away a lot of money trying to make a complex, dynamic, and visually diverse world. On the 2D characters though, there's full shadows and highlights and a little lighting gradient and a high framerate, which is a real high quality look, but it's also probably expensive to keep up, especially if they're trying to maintain everything as rounded and fluid as in the original Seuss style instead of using any animation simplification tricks.

It's all things that you can only really do with brute force, which makes sense for a high budget movie, but not so much for a series. God knows how Netflix calculates their cost/benefit for their original material. Or if they even calculate effectively, they kind of seem like they just throw money at projects with no questions asked and hope it works.

I watched a bit of Rise but found it hard to get into. How long does it take to pick up?

I mean, it probably depends on what you want to get into. It hasn't really dedicated itself to a long-term narrative or given any real indication towards that so far, but what I like about it is how it's funny and very high-energy. I kind of fell in love with it around where the turtles were in a dance off with time square mascots or when they wound up in professional wrestling.

Also by contrast, I think I can see a lot of ways where they keep animation costs down by interspersing a lot of low-movement shots between big action shots, which I appreciate.

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
Can't find a thread for it, just watched the Netflix adaption of Green Eggs and Ham. I thought it was pretty cute and liked some of the scenes like Guy am I saving EB from the flock of rabid birds by negging them (they couldn't make themselves seem impressive to scare them off, so they reversed the situation and made them feel lovely about themselves instead). Also the placement of the rant at Guy and Sam's friendship's breaking point was pretty impactful.

Looks like we’re getting a 6 episode Gumball miniseries called “Darwin’s Yearbook”.

https://www.animationmagazine.net/tv/cn-brings-back-gumball-with-special-darwins-yearbook-episodes/

quote:

Cartoon Network has announced a suite of brand-new episodes for its award-winning, global hit series The Amazing World of Gumball. Titled “Darwin’s Yearbook,” this series of special episodes is set to bring fans more hilarious moments with Gumball, Darwin and their friends at Elmore Junior High.

Set to roll out on Cartoon Network from December 2019, “Darwin’s Yearbook” will kick off with six special episodes, which are framed around Darwin creating the Elmore Junior High Yearbook at the request of Principal Brown. Each episode will focus on a different character from school, like class clown Banana Joe, the teleporting ghost Carrie, and even the teachers of Elmore Junior High, as Darwin is set the task of determining which teacher is most deserving of a precious slot in the class yearbook.

As Darwin seeks to fill the pages of the yearbook with photos of his friends, he soon realizes that these things are never that simple. But, with the help of his friends, their “Elmore Plus” accounts and the internet, Darwin might just be able to complete his yearbook adventures.

Launched in 2010 and currently in its sixth season, The Amazing World of Gumball continues to rank as one of Cartoon Network’s most popular shows worldwide – regularly attracting more than 130 million viewers, as well as mass critical acclaim.

The Green Eggs and Ham show on Netflix is probably the best animated (just the animation) show they've done. It's annoying and dumb but I enjoy the way it looks and moves for the most part. I don't know what it's actually called, but I usually hate that animation CG style that cheaper animated shows use.

Maybe it's the extra texture in everyone's faces? I don't have the vocabulary to explain why it's better.

It's weird, the pilot for Uncle Grandpa is one of the best for a CN series in the post What A Cartoon era, yet when it finally became a show of it's own it just felt kinda flat in comparison much of the time

I think part of it was that the original Uncle Grandpa pilot got retooled into Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, so when UG got their own show they decided to abandon some of the grungier aspects of the pilot/SMFA aesthetic to differentiate it from SMFA

Viacom (soon to be ViacomCBS) doesn't have a streaming platform of their own in the works so at this point, they have to buddy up with some other provider. Probably once their merger is done they'll consider either a more permanent partnership with Netflix (or Amazon) or spinning off their own streaming service
