Plenty of people are saying gen 3 owned (myself included). Not just that they weren't that bad, but that they were actively amazing. So many of my favorite pokemon come from that generation, and the sprite work was the best the series has ever looked. I can see that there are people who have strong opinions otherwise (as bizarre as that seems), so I could concede that one as "controversial".

But would anyone seriously come in and defend X and Y as great?

I kind of hope someone would, because I want to have some more positive associations with them. They made me lose interest in Pokemon until Sun and Moon came out. Which admittedly isn't that long, but I've been more or less interested in Pokemon since before Yellow was a thing, so it was a pretty decidedly bad time for me.

One of the nice things about XY was it was first game where you can legitimately breed a competitively perfect pokemon, I can never get too mad considering the previous countless hours it took to get a 85% perfect metagross.

I think it'll end up like XY. Some people, like me, will have commonly shared gripes that will be parroted a bunch. Others will simply not put them high when ranking them among other gens. And there'll be people who will call the others crazy because SnS introduced a bunch of important features and stuff that made them fun to go through, as well as improving competitive. And we'll all be right and dunk on the rival.

it's kinda hard for me to imagine anything we've seen being looked at with hindsight as 'important features' but otherwise yeah, this is pretty on the money

Moving to overworld Pokemon away from random encounters in grass is a pretty big deal. It's pretty comparable to X/Y jumping from sprites to models, in my mind.

X and Y introduced a lot of good things to the series (Fairy type, letting you change your clothes, letting you play as person of color, wonder trading), but the games themselves really could have used some polish and expansion and that's why I lament the lose of the hypothetical Z version.

Let's Go 'doesn't count' for a lot of people, seeing as it's kind of floating off on its own as a main-series-adjacent title.

ORAS had regular random encounters, with the additional ability to track rarer Pokemon with DexNav, but Pokemon still appeared in grass tiles at random.

Let's Go introduced that. :v: But yeah.

Anyway,
Gen 5 - BW is the best pokemon game, no contest. 9.5/10 RPG, only has a lull in the middle but has genius storytelling and route design that everything else pales in. BW2 is rougher, but its midgame is insanely fun with how much Triple and Rotation battle there is, and crazy postgame.
Gen 2 - Gen 3 and 6 introduce a lot to the core gameplay, but this gen and HGSS are the proof that content is extremely important, too. The level curve is absolutely hosed, but the style and amount of things to do save it and make it a star.
Gen 4 - SImply because HGSS is here. Platinum is great, tho.
Gen 3 - it's pretty good.
Gen 7 - SM is great, but unreplayable. And they resold it a year later. LGPE is an interesting experiment, but boy was four games in a row a strain that didn't let this stay in development enough to realize its ideas.
Gen 1 - where it all started and goofy fun
Gen 6 - XY feels very good to go through, but the story and bosses make it very unsatisfying. ORAS almost got me to drop out of the franchise.

So uh, Ditto can transform and then dynamax/gigantamax and use the other Pokemon’s Max moves. It can’t transform into a dynamaxed Pokemon though, it just turns into the base form. Still, Imposter Ditto could be quite viable.

IMO, the odd number gens are better actual generations, whereas the even numbered gens add important elements to the series but don't hold up as well on their own. Gen 4 bucks this trend some by having HGSS (I'm sorry guys, I'm not counting a DS era game as a Gen 2 game. It's a remake but it benefited massively from all the improvements Gen 4 added), and maybe the most improved 3rd version in the series, but if it had just been Diamond and Pearl I'm sure we'd be ranking it right by the bottom with X and Y.

I suck at directly ranking things, but in my books the series peaked at some point along the gen 3-5 curve, with Gen 6 and on seeing the difficulty drops and handholding getting too severe and Gen 1 and 2 simply being too unpolished to hold up as strongly.

I think that part of the reason XY is so (justly) looked down upon is that while third versions from Japanese Blue through Platinum had been straight improvements and B2W2 a new direction, it never felt like the original games of those generations had been purposefully made "incomplete" to make that so. XY is full of stuff that says "We would have put a feature here, but thought we could remove it to sell you Z later". It's a lot like on-disc DLC where they made the game worse on purpose.

Nuzlocke seems impossible to me if only I can never see them going out of their way to make the game simulate your monsters dying in the dog fights you do with them.

Obviously Pokemon shouldn't die in fights lorewise, but a mode where a Pokemon will leave you if it loses a fight under your command (maybe only while having insufficiently high friendship), representing the player character being uncharismatic or something, could be interesting. Reinforces the idea that Pokemon aren't slaves, and fits with the anime where Ash's Snivy is implied to have left several other Trainers she considered unworthy. I think the original "Capsule Monsters" concept was supposed to have a similar mechanic, based around the player character having a charisma stat, but they decided against it (maybe because it would have made the game too hard?).

Actually, a bunch of difficulty options flavored as character flaws would be amusing. "Bad at teaching" mode for no-XP runs, "miser" mode where you can't use consumable items...

would you eat a tauros cheeseburger? y/n

Assuming the meat was vat-grown instead of a Tauros being killed to make it, yeah. Tepig bacon and Blaziken spicy chicken seem worth trying too. Not to mention the various flavors of Alcremie cream, of course. And Farfetch'd. And Basculin - the red-striped and blue-striped ones are said to be equally delicious.

The Pokemon world has a lot of great food, actually, and not just Pokemon meat. There's the zillion different kinds of Berries, coming in just about every possible combination of sweetness, sourness, etc. which in addition to being edible in themselves, can be used to make Pokeblocks, flavor ice cream, etc. There's also the banana-like fruits that grow on Tropius, which apparently differ by region - they're sweeter in Alola. But apparently at least some real-world fruits exist as well - we know that there are apples because of the new apple dragon Pokemon.

And now there's all the curry recipes.

I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Australia is one of the next generations, Japan loves Australia and it has a distinct ecosystem that could be well-used to theme a pokemon generation as well as a setting that's easy to broadly stereotype into a pokemon region.

Australia (or rather part of Australia - it's too big for just one region) is an obvious one to do. There's memorable Australian-flavored Pokemon to bring back (Kangaskhan, Komala) as well as lots of inspirations for more Pokemon. You could even finally address the "why isn't the pouch Kangaskhan its own Pokemon" question, and maybe include other marsupial Pokemon if you can come up with a satisfying enough solution. Other obvious inspirations for regions include California, somewhere in South America (maybe Chile, for maximum linearity :v:), Egypt, Greece, and Italy.

Mainly the expanded number of Pokemon available in the game. Diamond and Pearl had a Sinnoh dex of 150, while leaving out a bunch of families that had evolutions and famously had only two fire type families (with one of them being Chimchar). Platinum fixed this by adding a bunch of Pokemon families, not just the Pokemon with Gen 4 evolutions, but random stuff like Houndour or Tropius.

Sinnoh completely lacking fire types was only made more galling when one of the Elite Four members was a fire specialist. He had a bunch of stuff with fire moves to supplement his horse and monkey.
