Heya Cute Thread, Fiona and I are in a real tight spot at the moment. I'm off work with an illness and my sweet dumb kitty got sick and needed to go to an emergency vet. She's doing ok but I tapped every financial resource I have and still came up short so I put together a GoFundMe for her. I've witnessed a bunch of goon fundraisers absolutely knock it out of the park and I've been thrilled to have be part of those in a small way, so I'm hoping to have a little of that karma come back my way. I'd appreciate literally anything, and if you can't help, spreading the word is appreciated just as much! (I got mod permission to post this and I'll only bug y'all once) Fiona's GFM https://twitter.com/SkookumSam/status/1194425076759719937

If you did brush an animal, like two floofy cats, and put the fur in a little hanging cage thing, would birds take the fur for nests? Might be a nice thing to hang out in the spring

fool_of_sound posted:Cheetahs don't attack people because adult humans are too large for them to hunt safely and effectively. Usually that means they'll attack small humans or children if they can find them alone. There are other big cats that are kind of notorious for that and that's also why certain kinds of animal sanctuaries have age minimums. Do not carry a human baby near a chimp, for example. Cheetahs apparently just...don't. While most carnivores will attack anything they know they can beat cheetahs in particular just never go after people at all. Why? Who knows?

My theory on Cheetahs is that we partially domesticated some of them before they went through their population bottleneck and the survivors are just predisposed to leave humans alone.

Holy poo poo that's a lot of loving bats under that... what, is that an AC unit? A heat exchanger pump's external section? Either way also pretty surprised by how chill they are about the whole thing. Cute bats.

I've got a bat house that has about an inch-thick space for them inside. It's about 3/4 the size of a box for a ream of paper outside. Supposed to hold, like 70 individuals, IIRC? They are tiny. Build a Bat House "I love bats because mosquitoes LOVE to bite me. Pesticides can be harmful to mosquitoes’ predators as well as mosquitoes. According to Bat Conservation International, one little brown bat can eat 60 medium-sized moths or over 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in one night!"

Cheetahs' (new) bottleneck is now, of course: "The cheetah is widely known as the planet’s fastest land animal, but unknown to many, it is also Africa’s most threatened big cat. Today, there are estimated to be only 7,100 cheetahs left in the wild." https://www.panthera.org/cat/cheetah?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2bHdlPPy5QIV2CCtBh0QbQ6eEAAYASAAEgKnC_D_BwE https://www.awf.org/wildlife-conservation/cheetah Etc.

Hence why I feel domesticating them is probably the long term best option for their conservation

Cheetahs have proportionately smaller heads than most cats. In their evolutionary quest to Go Fast, they've lost a lot of strong muscles and heavy bone structure around their head. They are specialized for hunting impala and other small gazelles, after all, which tend to be on the fragile side, so the fact that cheetahs don't have the bite strength similarly sized cats do isn't a problem for them. So they look at humans and go, nope, can't handle something like that.

Hiro Protagonist posted:Thurston is slowly becoming my favorite internet cat, and this just further cemented it. The cat's awesome; his owner always sounds like he's whining at the cat and being all negative. Like, hey pal, maybe Thurston is yelling out in triumph, "YES! IT IS A SHRINE TO ME! I APPRECIATE YOUR HOMAGE TO ME AS YOUR RIGHTFUL KING, MY LOYAL SUBJECTS! RAWR! " And instead the guy's going, "Oh it's not big enough? But we did it all for youuuuu! Why don't you appreciate ittt? " Guy, he does. He destroyed it by mistake, not design. That's love right there.
