in other news, you should always trust western experts on developing country corruption

quote:

A US professor of international studies who co-wrote a book about organised crime and is an expert on money laundering and corruption in South America has been arrested on charges of laundering corruption proceeds from Venezuela.

Bruce Bagley, 73, of Coral Gables, Florida, was released on bail of $300,000 (£230,000) after appearing at Miami federal court.

The University of Miami professor faces a charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering and two money laundering charges. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.

Bagley’s attorney, Daniel Forman, told the Miami Herald they planned to “diligently defend his case”, adding: “We’re confident at the end of the day he’s going to be vindicated.”

Bagley is co-author of Drug Trafficking, Organized Crime and Violence in the Americas Today, published in 2015, among other books, and has testified before Congress and as an expert in court and been interviewed by numerous news organisations.

William F Sweeney Jr, the head of the FBI’s New York office, said Bagley profited by helping others launder the proceeds of their crimes.

“About the only lesson to be learned from Prof Bagley today is that involving oneself in public corruption, bribery, and embezzlement schemes is going to lead to an indictment,” he said.

US attorney Geoffrey S Berman in New York said Bagley opened bank accounts specifically to launder money for corrupt foreigners.

“The funds Bagley was allegedly laundering were the proceeds of bribery and corruption, stolen from the citizens of Venezuela,” Berman said.

An indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court said that from November 2017 until April, Bagley agreed to receive about 14 deposits from bank accounts in Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates totalling $3m.

It said Bagley believed the funds generated through public works projects in Venezuela were derived from graft and corruption.

According to the indictment, Bagley transferred the majority of the money into the bank accounts of a co-conspirator to conceal the nature, source and ownership of the funds. Authorities said Bagley kept a 10% commission for himself from the money he laundered.

The University of Miami said in a statement that Bagley was placed on administrative leave. “As this is a personal matter in an ongoing investigation, the university has no further comment at this time,” it said.

oh also i don't think it was mentioned in this thread but the us put out an arrest warrant (for corruption of course) for that venezuelan military intelligence chief who joined guaido's coup attempt earlier this year, and now the guy has gone into hiding in spain

which probably sends a great message to any potential future venezuelan coup participants

more protesters shot with live ammunition today, in El Alto this time, by soldiers clearing a path through the barricades for fuel trucks leaving the refinery. like last time, not posting the videos, you can look them up yourself if you really want to see dead people. in the various videos I've seen at least three people who were definitely dead and twice that many who probably were.

the fuel trucks immediately went straight to the nearest army base.

the one piece of good news here is that the army would not have done that if they were not getting desperately short on fuel, which is not surprising considering the scale of the operation they're running. makes me wonder how badly their other resources are getting strained.

in short it means that they can't sustain this kind of operational tempo forever, if the people can remain on the streets long enough they may be able to basically starve the army out.

it is honestly shocking how one-sided the violence has been, for all the chants of 'civil war now' there has been very little active resistance to the military so far. a few cops and soldiers have been struck with sticks and boards and similar blunt objects and a few more have been hit with rocks and bricks, none of them seriously enough to require hospitalization. there may have been some armed protesters firing back at the military during the confrontation in Cochabamba but if so they were few in number and using extremely low quality civilian firearms (there is really not much you can do against a helicopter gunship with a rusty single-barreled break-open shotgun), and the only evidence we have that even that happened is the military showing off some discarded guns they supposedly captured.

the coup government is being forced to resort to a bunch of blatantly false and outlandish claims in order to make the violence seem even somewhat justified - in this case the explanation they're using is that the protesters blocking their fuel trucks were intending to dynamite the oil refinery and destroy the entire city. in Cochabamba one of the coup's government ministers suggested that the protesters may have shot themselves in order to make the government look bad.

the most infuriating part of this whole thing is how much pro-coup Bolivian posters on social media just eat these obvious lies up, instantly and completely convinced that indigenous protesters intended to blow up their own neighborhood for no reason

That's not really surprising, most cultures around the world are decently peaceful and not frothing to go to war at a moment's notice like Americans are.

Kind of taking a backseat to Bolivia at the moment for obvious reasons but there has been a popular uprising going on in Haiti that is seeing murderous crackdowns as well. Basically everywhere in the Western Hemisphere south of the US is either in left wing hands or facing intense popular uprisings and violent reprisals.
