The egg plays a role in its own fertilization rather than being entirely passive.

As already answered, the egg plays an active role. That being said, it seems weird to try and dismiss that the sperm seek the egg; they are still doing that, but not without any guidance from the egg!

To expand a little. The sperm doesn’t just find the egg based on random chemical signatures naturally occurring from the egg. The egg specifically produces a chemical designed to attract the sperm.

My wife is a knitter and this happens a TON with non-academic fiber artists and historical and archeological academics, being able to correctly identify items that have been incorrectly identified or attributed, sometimes for decades. A lot of that stuff hasn't been changed in millenia, like tools and techniques. I wish I could recall some examples.

These have always fascinated me, as well as this idea that everything we find has been given religious or ritual explanations when a bunch of the time it was probably just someone dicking around. Then there's the whole other bag of "those people couldn't possibly have been smart enough to do thing so it must have been aliens" which is infuriating.

There's a sort of default where you go "It was probably ritualistic" if you absolutely can't figure out what something is for. It's usually the archaeologist's way of bullshitting when they don't have evidence.

Ok that one I get because I can think of several ways to keep knives away from children that don't include throwing them on roofs

Edit:

I reread the Twitter thread, and they were stored in the ceiling, not the roof. There's a big difference betweem the two.

That’s not a very nice thing to suggest.

Many of the examples in that thread were cool & good. I myself have oft repeated the story of the mysterious knives in the ceiling.

The one about the attracting egg seemed less good, but it turns out that is only because the tweeter did a terrible job of summarising Dr Martin’s findings. :shobon:
