latest Citations Needed has a cool guest who did actually provide some nuance on the issues of immigration rights activism and US labor organizing since she has studied/been part of both

Adam Johnson saying immigration was justice or reparations to the global south seemed sort of off to me though. It reminded me of the liberal impulse to label individual, nonpolitical acts of survival as also an act of resistance or even victory. Real justice to me involves the formerly oppressing class being forced to surrender, or at least make concessions of some sort, to the formerly oppressed. I know some of the migrant caravans from Honduras did have a sort of political character, so I could be convinced otherwise.

Many people are leaving countries the US and other Western powers have ravaged and destroyed, and they have the right too. However, many more people are still in those countries, and they still deserve justice and reparations. No one should be forced to leave their homeland just to live a decent life.

Also I think you have a point in the abstract but a) more immigration can be easily done before global socialism so its worth fighting for in the meantime b) its a useful frame to argue in since its not about what immigrants can do for us but rather that its our fault in a lot of ways

It's not our fault though, it's the fault of the ruling class of the US and other Western countries. Some US workers, mostly white and mostly men, have benefited from that relationship, although less now than at any point in the previous 70 years. Admittedly, that's sort of a semantic point.

I'm partly scarred from US liberals saying "Just move!" to people in the country's areas that have been screwed over by trade policy and neoliberalism. I don't think it's a stretch to think that mindset could easily be applied to people in other countries as well.

the existing immigration policy is inhumane and people who come here should be treated with complete dignity and be allowed in, but to open up borders to all unlimited freedom of movement would basically amount to massive brain drain away from the global south and the countries that most need a local base of people able to grow their own economy. those who are in the bottom in their own countries without the resources to move would be flat out hosed if the developed nations are allowed to just take their labor force away. bernie's right, complete open borders policies are a koch brothers proposal and basically amount to seizing human wealth from poorer nations

quote:

His current fan club extends to Cayne, Henry Rosovsky, the former dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Larry Summers, Harvard’s current president. Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz says, “I’m on my 20th book…. The only person outside of my immediate family that I send drafts to is Jeffrey.” Real-estate developer and philanthropist Marshall Rose, who has worked with Epstein on projects in New Albany, Ohio, for Wexner, says, “He digests and decodes the information very rapidly, which is to me terrific because we have shorter meetings.”

Also on the list of admirers are former senator George Mitchell and a gaggle of distinguished scientists, most of whom Epstein has helped fund in recent years. They include Nobel Prize winners Gerald Edelman and Murray Gell-Mann, and mathematical biologist Martin Nowak. When these men describe Epstein, they talk about “energy” and “curiosity,” as well as a love for theoretical physics that they don’t ordinarily find in laymen. Gell-Mann rather sweetly mentions that “there are always pretty ladies around” when he goes to dinner chez Epstein, and he’s under the impression that Epstein’s clients include the Queen of England. Both Nowak and Dershowitz were thrilled to find themselves shaking the hand of a man named “Andrew” in Epstein’s house. “Andrew” turned out to be Prince Andrew, who subsequently arranged to sit in the back of Dershowitz’s law class.

quote:

Many people comment there is something innocent, almost childlike about Jeffrey Epstein. They see this as refreshing, given the sophistication of his surroundings. Alan Dershowitz says that, as he was getting to know Epstein, his wife asked him if he would still be close to him if Epstein suddenly filed for bankruptcy. Dershowitz says he replied, “Absolutely. I would be as interested in him as a friend if we had hamburgers on the boardwalk in Coney Island and talked about his ideas.”

yes, they used to stream the actual debate on the chapo stream but it got shut down by twitch because the failing lamestream media didn’t like that. good luck synching it up, shouldn’t be too hard
