This is what kitbash priority is for an extremely expensive ($50 to $150 on the sprue) OOP model that is from a discontinued game system. Conventional wisdom for making a close-to-true-scale Imperator is that a 40k knight is best but those are expensive and I have a lot of extra pieces to use. I'd prefer one a little shorter than the 7" or 8" of the knight so that it doesn't dwarf my first-edition Epic Beetlebacks or third-ed Warlords. This is $20 (shipping is killer so I ordered two).

I can make two Imperators from the ones I ordered and sell the three originals i have.

Can I make a good kill team out of just these units?

I would say only worth it if you get a discount. If you don't play ZM missions, you don't need the tiles, and you can get Goliaths and Eschers for under $25 per gang, if you do a little shopping. Dice and tokens are something you can get anywhere.

Played some Underhive last night, we're mostly playing out of the OG starter box with the comprehensive rulebook + yaktribe builder. We wound up rolling a mission in the book, not thinking too much about it and got The Marauders.

So some Van Sarr came to the Goliath territory and got their poo poo smashed in, then the Goliaths went and picked a fight with Orlocks and were bushwhacked in turn.

Then all the Goliaths suffered a Critical Injury or straight up died in the post-phase. Woo.

Speaking of completed painting though, seeing as I promised to post these guys when I finished them (which was like, a year ago, now? :v:), yesterday I finished off my IG Killteam squad. HERE is the finished squad of eight.
Four riflemen (including a radioman and a medic) as well as my four specialists - the sergeant, flamer, sniper and meltagunner. Sorry about the poor quality of the photos - I'm just glad that it's finally done, personally! Just in time for another game, haha :D (You can't really tell, but the visors are all reflective. You can't really see it here, but I also decided to put blood all over the sarge's chainsword too, seeing as in the last game we did he blocked a space marine's melee attack and then one-hit killed the poor guy)

I quite like the Anvil models, in terms of both looks and easy of assembly - they were great to put together! I think that if I ever need to get any more guys, I'll definitely buy from them.

I've just finished an initial read through of my copy. Some pretty cool stuff (and awesome artwork), but the usual balance issues between gangs, gang special rules and scenarios. I'm looking forward to seeing your take on the Corpse Grinders, because I think they look unholy strong. Their leader, champs and gangers' close combat abilities just blow away the nearest competition, both from their normal stats, amazing cc weapons and their special rules. Yes, in theory the 'juves' are the only ones who can have any ranged weapons at all. But they can have some, and the Initiates themselves are criminally cheap. They're basically Orlock gangers with Infiltrate(!) and a bonus to save against blasts/templates, for substantially less points.

My main complaint with the Book of Ruin is that they didn't include the actual Uprising Campaign. It's kind of a problem locking it to a $300 box... At least the missions are playable in any campaign, but I'm still disappointed.



I didn't expect much out of Corpse Grinders, to be honest, but they've managed to make an all-melee gang interesting to play. They're not simply goliaths without guns which what I was worried about. They've got a bit more going on than that and focusing on the initiates was a good move. They will be an absolute melee powerhouse, but they'll be in your face from turn one thanks to the initiates infiltrating. You won't simply be able to pick off all of their heavy hitters as you'll have more immediate threats to deal with. As a campaign progresses they might be able to snag some ranged weapons for their initiates and change up their style.

Hey, by the way...what's the best thing(s) to get, in order to run a Kill Team campaign? I'm thinking about getting myself a copy of the 2018 KT core rulebook, although does this have all the campaign/narrative materials, or have they split that off into another book? (And also, if there are any recommended unofficial materials, like rule tweaks, etc. then those would be appreciated as well)

It seems like there isn’t a great solution, just by the constraints of the game system.

Every good melee unit is two of deadly, fast, durable, because you need to be able to get to the scrum quick and/or be able to weather a few turns of shooting and/or hit like a mack truck when you do

shooting is always, always going to be better than melee in a vacuum because one needs to walk over to hurt things and the other doesn't

Well, game systems aren't physics, you can rejigger them.

Then again, this is GW we're speaking about, and writing rules was never their forte.

In theory sure.

In practice GW just makes monster units that charge first turn and neuter shooting armies.

I really rate Ferocity!
- Nerves of Steel is one of the most important skills in the game, that or Spring Up is absolutely vital for any close combat-oriented model (which I agree is not the most appealing part of Necromunda's design).
- True Grit I think is a great way to try and keep people alive - you become very unlikely to go down OOA from most shooting attacks and it improves your chance to survive a charge with a flesh wound and strike back.
- Unstoppable, I prefer True Grit but it can be good.

So yeah, Berserker is only OK, not a bad way to cheaply get attacks on a cc model. Fearsome is great in theory on, say, a flamer champion, but in practice a lot of dangerous models have good willpower, it depends on your opponent.

Impetuous, well, I'm not sure I'd choose it, but it's surprisingly OK. If your crew allows consolidation into close combat, which RAW isn't allowed, then it can be downright useful. It really can get you into total cover following a melee kill if you play on a heavy enough board.

Speaking of AT... I'm probably going to be buying in sometime soon, and I'm trying to decide on terrain. I know the GW stuff is pretty good, but I've seen some people mention Dropzone Commander terrain as a good option too, does anyone know which brand for that? Or is it worth just going all in on the GW stuff?

Also, the 300 starter box seems like a not-terrible deal, yeah? The battle box thing was better but RIP.

I got a box of the Dropzone Commander cardstock buildings from Hawk Games (Cityscape/Ruinscape) on eBay - they’re not made anymore but sets pop up now and then. 20 buildings is more than enough even for a couple tables. I may 3D print some other pieces just for some variety, but the GW stuff is way too pricey imo.

You can get a better deal if you don't care about the buildings in the GME - there aren't enough to really do much of anything with, tbh. Grab an AT rules box for like $40 and troll Ebay for deals. Vanilla Warlords can be grabbed for under $50 if you're patient. Knights are a dime a dozen.
