Cheer up! At least you don't live in Toronto then! But yeah, the recent Toronto serial killer that had been killing dozens of gay men that the Toronto Police ignored until they were literally forced to by public pressure and they captured the guy in like a week is still fresh on my mind. And this was before, during, and after the Toronto pride parade that they were not allowed to march in uniform for and got really salty about.

Really it's anyone who isn't straight and white. There have been several serial killers who preyed on black women and the cops just act like the victims never existed in the first place. The community ends up having to start some sort of independent investigation to shame the cops into action most of the time.

The cops were trying with Ridgeway, and he was one of their top suspects as far back as the mid-80s, they just didn't have anything on him until DNA science caught up

There were three known serial killers active at the same time in Los Angeles in the 90s killing black sex workers. I genuinely believe that the primary reason why there is such a backlog of DNA evidence to be processed is that everyone involved knows that it's going to reveal a whole bunch of serial killers and serial rapists. And once folks start piecing together how many murderers and rapists could have been stopped earlier if they'd just processed the evidence, it's going to be a huge scandal, and no one wants to be in charge when it finally comes to light.

Hell, the CIA and FBI both covered up part of the Kennedy assassination to hide the fact that they'd been watching Oswald for months and should have anticipated the threat. And that was when the president was the loving murder victim. It's a wonder any crimes get solved.

Solice Kirsk posted:I lived in Maricopa county for about three years and it's basically a dystopian nightmare. Everything is the same sunbleached beige, racism is open and frequent, the water is full of weird solid impurities so people just act like getting kidney stones in your 30's is something normal that happens, and (this is a much smaller personal problem I had with living there) everyone seems to get married right out of high school/college out there so dating in your late 20's was near impossible with the exception of the occasional affair with a bored house wife or someone with very obvious personality problems. So I grew up in the mountains south of Queen Creek and spent almost thirty years there. This is entirely accurate. Like holy gently caress it took me years to figure out the two floors of my house were different shades of beige. Everything is loving beige. You have two choices of lawn-- dead grass or raked pink or white stones. Your neighbors will either be friendly bikers, a large friendly Hispanic family, or terrifyingly racist white people (also like 75% chance Mormon.) If you want any kind of interesting interaction at all, you have to go find and hang out with Desert People, which equates to self-built homes (admittedly really neat and artistic, for the most part) in the middle of loving nowhere. If you're lucky they'll have a pool, if not summers will suck. Get ready to ride a horse to the bar because the steering wheel will burn your hands and car AC is never cool enough. I poo poo you not it's like loving Mad Max out there. God I have stories for days. I grew up in a dome house with mirrors on the roof and stained glass and poo poo, and my family wasn't even the weird outsider family in town. So an unnerving story: My mom's cowboy boyfriend and a friend of his were walking out in the desert when they found a mattress on the ground-- this is super common, because desert and 90's. They decided it would be funny to jump on it and after a few good bounces realized it smelled funny. Turned out someone had cut a slit into the side and stuffed a corpse in the middle of the mattress, and here they were bouncing on this poor dead dude's bones. When I was maybe 15 I was riding around with my friend on his dirtbike. We saw a guy parked by some cow lakes in the middle of BLM land. He got a roll of carpet out of his trunk and dumped it into the water. Looked super heavy. He just stared at us when we rode by. Anyway welcome to the desert, don't forget to shake your shoes out.

There is a lot going on in this post but what the gently caress is a cow lake? Is that just a dam / pond that farmers have rigged up for livestock to drink from or has someone made one of those rat emulsification devices big enough for cows?

Cattle lakes/ponds are big reservoir things, fed by wells. They often have high dirt walls and cattle drink from them. Usually they're out in the flat parts of the desert and on BLM land that ranchers use.

There's also definitely a certain "let them fight" mentality when criminals prey on other people who are also suspected of breaking the law.
