the bottom map could describe poo poo like victory road. Yes, it is a shame this game does not have one. But there is a difference between the dungeons and the routes. You can complain about the lack of dungeons all you want, I won't dispute that. The actual routes, however, have never been that complex.

You are getting a real hang up on the split between linearity and non-linearity, when what makes a route good is how much there is to explore.

Is it safe to say it took me a while to figure out what the hell I was looking at with it? Also here's another scalding hot controversial take; It's got barely any lore pertaining to it and it's boring as gently caress outside of being "EVIL".

The online integration in this game is so atrocious that it actually manages to impact your engagement with the rest of the game by introducing latency and freezing to the Wild Area. Even if you're just doing singleplayer stuff, and not actively attempting to struggle with the raid interface.

I think Sword and Shield is a very obviously flawed and rushed game and people acting like its amazing are being pretty delusional.

But old Pokemon route design was garbage. The wild area was more fun to explore than any route in the series ever was.

the wild area was good. i liked the distinction between routes and the wild area. there were effectively no dungeons since all the caves were just routes.

a third section of the wild area linking to the villain team lair, and then a fourth section leading to the box legendary story setting would have done wonders

Honestly I agree, it would have been cool if there had been literally any build-up to it showing up

To be fair, they really do take off the training wheels somewhere between the 3rd and 5th gym.

I was worried because the typical Pokemon difficulty curve has a huge trough between the 2nd gym and the elite four.

Edit: The only trainer I've lost to is the owner of the ice cream shop in Hammerlocke, though.

That was a close one because I have nothing that's effective against fire types on my team, accidentally found out he has the fire shield ability when I sent Raboot out there against his bug/fire type, and then spent a while reviving my whole rear end team because leave no one behind. Also because I'm only accepting pokemon into my team that I can see as being chosen/representing a Black Eagles member.

alternatively it's almost like catching and training a bunch of cute animals followed by fighting the gym leaders has always been the main draw of these games, not looking for items behind HM walls

The thing I'm most disappointed/irritated at is that all the official tournaments plus the big unofficial platform (showdown, albeit you don't HAVE to play the most recent gen, that's just where most activity is) are going along with dexit, and those things are where most is my Pokemon fun comes from these days. Knowing gamefreak there's absolutely no guarantee that most of my favorites will ever be playable outside of niche third-party simulation ever again.

You're a gym challenger, you wear the challenger uniform in official matches. You are not employed at any of the pokemon league gyms. The uniforms are more like fan merch.

For me the draw of Pokemon has always been about going on an adventure in a new region with places to explore with my fun dudes, like going into caves or ruins. I want to explore the Pokemon World, not a small themepark between giant stadiums. Luckily the Wild Area delivers in a least part of this way, even if it's largely empty save for the Pokemon. Hope for the future.

With Sword and Shield no route in the game ever left me thinking that I should return to it for any reason other than catching some guys I missed, and that feels bad.

Or, imagine the following: actually exploring the world, the setting the games are in. Because if I wanted more than just the battling I'd only play Showdown.
Perish the thought of actually going on an adventure with your pokemon, just go through the designated path.

it's like Pokemon is something a lot of people have become very emotionally invested in because that's the whole Pokemon gimmick, and then they care about decisions the producers and developers make, much like how my uncle that works at Nintendo gets really emotionally invested in his model train room

Glad people are using Hoenn as examples of having good location design, in terms of exploration original Hoenn is one of the best examples I can think of for progression out of really any linear game period. It's amazing how every single time you hit a milestone like a bike or a gym you basically get the choice to either beeline to your objective or spend hours faffing about and exploring all the new stuff that opens up to you while also ultimately bringing you to your destination.

Sinnoh had that too sort of but sinnoh also had a garbage progression from like gym 4 to 8
