Dahl was an intelligence officer for the UK, but then it's more likely Fleming based most of the character on his brother, Peter Fleming.

Fleming's main inspiration was probably Duško Popov who was known for both being a good spy and being a womanizer.

I like this one because it plays like the climax of a really mundane, petty version of Manchurian Candidate.

Is it the way that Karen seems resigned to a pattern of behaviour she has no ability to control? She's not enjoying herself.

That's what I like about it.

hell yeah I would have loved that. When I was like 12 I had a stuffed marten that we found in a cabin in a small woods my grandpa owned in the 90s. It was super cool, posed in action like it was fighting. We threw it out later for some reason :(

My step-dad had a stuffed porcupine we would pose in corners and stuff to scare the hell out of my mom

I have no idea why he had that, but it was awesome

Isn't that kinda inconvenient? Like did it loose spines? I would be scared too, if my kids would keep hiding a big ball of sharp needles in my way.

yes and yes. they don't fall out any faster than fur tho, so apparently it was about 10-15 years old at that point and about 1/3rd of the needles were gone.
