do not underestimate the elements while election canvassing. take a heavy jacket, gloves, a scarf and a hat. take care of your health on the doorstep.

Our CLP strongly discourages solo canvassing for safety reasons and protect both canvasser and door-answerer from any accusations.

We have had a couple go off on their own bat without clearing it first but I think their branches have now leaned on them.

You just need to live so high up that your brain stops recognizing it as being high up.

I breifly had classes in the tower block at uni and became immediately tense the minute I got in the lift and it didn't stop until I went back down again.

It's not just vertigo but actual acrophobia, I don't like being above the ground.

Contrariwise though I like terraces. Small back yard 2 up 2 down is grand imo.

yeah I'm the same, being high up (like in a plane at altitude) is not a problem, the problem is going up (or, slightly less, coming back down)

Lipstick Apathy
So far my 'activism' has been limited to donating a small amount to Labour and Momentum but I have just signed up to do an evening's phone canvassing.

I'm not a Labour Pary member and I've never done this before. This might sound dumb, but who is being called and why? It says training will be given if needed, but should I let someone know in advance that it's needed?

The website also says the Battle Bus will be coming to the constituency 'with a special guest'. Is it...could it be....Jam Man himself?

it will be people who allow their information to be available on the electoral register for contact and marketing

you will be asking them if they will be voting in the upcoming election, who they voted for last election and whether they would prefer a labour or a tory government

you can then convince them to vote labour. the system will give you some info about the local candidate.

beware though, labour's phonebanking system, while new, is utterly terrible and awkward. you might have a very confusing time if it works as well for you as it did for me, which wasn't very well.

don't be deterred by short phonecalls or nobody picking up, that is normal. just update the data and move on.

you do not really need training for phonebanking though. there is basically a script in front of you if you are desperate for guidance, and all the info you need will be before you. the biggest issue really will be trying to make it actually work right. it is really buggy.

e; important to say, it will also tell you the person's name and what we believe they voted for last.

basically, you give the labour dialogue system your number, pick a constituency to canvass for, and then it will match you up with someone to call. then it will automatically phone you, put you on a connecting line where you wait, then connect you to the voter. you never see their phone number or anything like that, just a name and constituency.

Best not to fall into the trap of doing what the media did with the NHS guy; of course politically engaged people are involved in politics, and of course those are the types of people who want to go on QT. What's shady is the Tory guy pulling the "You have made it impossible for me, a father of daughters, to vote Labour" when he clearly had no intention of ever voting Labour.

Apparently the financial conduct authority are looking into the polling companies. Apologies if this isn't news.

It fills me with cringe to watch comrades (and there have been a lot of them this last week) get conspiratorial about polling companies. It's not worth it. They are individual snapshots of public opinion that are worthwhile only to observe trends if you are a supporter of a particular party.

The polling companies use their public political polls as freebie publicity for their commercial polling operations - like the above allowing traders to short markets on polling day. A pre-election poll is selling the accuracy of their methodology and breadth of their polling panels (or their ability to get phone/ responses from difficult areas of the population). A hedge fund wants to buy the services of the firm most likely to make them cash :capitalism: - but most of their services are bought by companies looking to do market research - e.g. is Bob from Bolton more likely to buy New-Coke if it has a blue font or a red font.

Looking at the article, the claimed plan is to allow free parking to blue pass holders and people who are long-term seriously ill. I'm a big fan of the Tories adopting watered down versions of Labour policies though, the same desperate strategy which famously worked so well in the other direction for Ed Milliband.

One tip from telesales: smile. It changes the way your voice sounds and people respond to the expression they hear in your voice. It helps to be a bit OTT as well to make up for all the non-verbal communication that a phone conversation excludes.
