Dammit, I just figured out that the USpol thread is not in fact the impeachment thread (even though it's consistently used as such). Sad.

I dunno if anyone else read through these but it’s a lot of repetition of copies of letters and letterhead and photocopied John Solomon Hill articles about the whole debunked Biden Burisma 2016 election conspiracy. Some log entries of calls between Pompeo and Giuliani and lots of evidence Parnas was involved as a translator when they were desperate after the 2018 elections went so poorly for them so they were interviewing the corrupt prosecutor from Ukraine who was telling them all the poo poo Giuliani and Trump have been repeating that John Solomon reported while working for the Hill. Also like six copies of the letter of support for Yovanovitch signed by her various supporters. Nunes is also in a few call logs with Pompeo at various times.

The reason the rules can never change is that a vote to change the rules is tantamount a vote for impeachment, or will be viewed that way. Plus Democrats would be dumb to do it, because the Republicans are 100% craven enough to hide their votes and then save their president in darkness.

It's also pointless because if the vote is split, the individual Trumpers will loudly announce they voted against removal.

I think that the vote is either going to be along party lines or something like 90-10

The whole point is that you need cross party support, which is NORMALLY a good thing, because otherwise Mitch would have removed Obama in 2014 just because he could.

But it's not great when a major political party is compromised along with the President.

True, but it's a lot harder to convince 17 (of today's) senators to cross party lines, then to get 5 people to do it (napkin math, but the number you'd need back when there were 13 states).

At this rate none of them will cross party lines, and Manchin and Sinema will vote to acquit. Honestly maybe it'd be better to just censure him at this point, you might get GOP support for that. Though I am completely unable to understand how this is the case in light of the hearings, polling for impeachment is falling, especially in swing states. The GOP is gonna turn the senate trial into a shitshow where they parrot Russian propaganda and drag it out as much as possible. I desperately wish that there was something the Democrats could do to change people's minds, but half the country is plugged into a media ecosystem that completely insulates them from any facts that support Trump's guilt.

Maybe there would be some hope if they played hardball for documents/subpoenas. Start fining Pompeo and Mulvaney a million dollars a day until they comply. Refuse to appropriate any money for the state dept or DOD. Arrest them if the fines don't work. But for some reason Pelosi is completely and utterly unwilling to do that, which sucks because there has to be a paper trail that directly implicates Trump. I'm sure we'll see it in a decade after a mountain of FOIA requests for all the good it does then.

I know Nancy Pelosi is supposed to be some legislative genius but I cannot see the benefit of trying to rush this and not even trying to force compliance with subpoenas. This poo poo is really loving serious and it's incredibly important to gather the strongest evidence possible, even if it fucks with the primary calendar a little bit.

The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has, on several occasions now, straight up admitted to high crimes and misdemeanors. The problem is not enough of the representative government will admit those high crimes and misdemeanors are, in fact, high crimes and misdemeanors.

I agree though, it's important to keep pressing the attack. It's not just fighting an opposition party, we're also fighting apathy and misinformation.

I think the strategy is that if the Republicans are determined to acquit him, it doesn't matter how much evidence they gather so it's not worth spending extra time on it. They have enough to convince anybody that can be convinced of his guilt.

Getting it over with fairly quickly then makes it a campaign issue and every Democrat at every level will be running on it.

Steve king was stripped of all of his committee positions and is going to get routed next year as a result.

Obviously Nunes would never resign because he's a gutless worm but I'd be satisfied if Trump's right hand man was no longer on the committee investigating Trump.

Although King was on committees relevant to his constituency. Nunes is only on intelligence for some reason.

Hill lost her seat because she pulled a Bill Clinton, etc. by abusing her authority by having sex with an underling; she just attempted to shift the narrative in what was essentially her resignation speech and a lot of people fall for the spin or just didn't care about what she did because they still don't see a problem with it. As mentioned, King was basically rendered completely ineffective. Your point is correct, but those are bad examples.
