In a contest of bad parents, I don't think trying to make sure some creeps can't send dick picks would get you to the finals. There's a huge contrast between the internet today and the internet when "protecting your kids" was just installing NetNanny to block bangbros. My nieces and nephew can't even look at YouTube without being bombarded by those weird Russian kids videos of Spiderman humping Elsa or whatever so I dunno what makes you think trying to keep internet creeps away makes them a helicopter parent.

Keeping internet creeps away is one thing, but *checks notes* having a report of every text sent by your child at the end of the day, or a location tracker, is loving gross, and helicopter parenting, respectively. Very possible to do all the things you want to prevent, which I'm all for, without resorting to this gross app.

You know literally nothing about the situation except the existence of an app and a child. You don't even know the child's age. If you aren't going to suggest things that could replace the app and instead just want to make things up to be smug about, gently caress off.

Also, just if the kid is over the age of 11, because by then they should have already figured out how to disable all that poo poo, like we all did at that age.

The fix to your technical issue is to use the normal android messaging app and not some sketchy third party shitware, because the third party shitware you bought apparently sucks. The fact that creeping on your kid's communications is going to gently caress them up for years is just like, extra.

Iron Crowned posted:Also, just if the kid is over the age of 11, because by then they should have already figured out how to disable all that poo poo, like we all did at that age. The difference here is that your parents' filter from the 90s probably didn't send a notification to one or more accounts indicating it had been disabled. If my parents' satellite receiver had emailed them every time I punched in their password to watch Real Sex or whatever on HBO, I'd have gotten my rear end beat. Plus, that was probably the worst they had to worry about. There wasn't a camera on our TV either. Fi doesn't provide content filtering services for a monthly fee like the major carriers so it's not unreasonable to ask for advice here. A couple of people offered suggestions of a different app which is probably more in line with what they were looking for. No need to get lovely about it and provide unsolicited goony parenting advice.

nine16thsdago posted:here's another goofy thing. i had homeassistant emailing certain messages to the fi sms gateway for almost a year. that previously always went to messages, no matter what i tried. after completing the above steps, they're now going to hangouts. goofy update: i thought everything was OK after this, but it turned out that the messages via the fi sms gateway were only coming through when on sprint, never on t-mobile. when the thing switched to sprint from tmo, i'd suddenly get an avalanche of the messages i should have gotten since being on tmo. that was the last straw. fi service itself is just too screwy in my area anyway. the delays in an actual incoming phone call ringing my device (on either service, through multiple handsets, physical sim & e-sim) has finally become too much of a problem to deal with. so, trip report: i cancelled both lines on a fi group plan, sat in an at&t corporate store and had both numbers ported over in no time. that process was surprisingly easy & straightforward. on cancellation, one is presented with the option of porting numbers back to google voice or to another carrier. fi service was active all the way up until at&t initiated the port request, which took less than 5 minutes to complete, and i got status updates & email confirmations from google at every step. A++ would cancel again. i had fi for 3 years. i really did like it for international travel, hangouts integration, straightforward billing, etc. i think if one lives in, e.g., a city with outstanding sprint/tmo service then it's probably awesome. no hard feelings, google. it's not you it's me.

Do it, I went from the XL to the 3A XL a little while back. My OG XL had really dropped in battery life over the last year, it's nice to spend a day listening to podcasts and not be at 13% battery by the time I get home.

I currently have a pixel 2xl, and it's pretty fine for the most part. Would it be a downgrade to grab the 3a for $249? I'm kind of tired of a big phone and I know the camera on the 3/3a is better than mine.

My Pixel works perfectly fine, but the lack of wireless charging annoys me (and the adapters for that aren't as good as I want them to be). Still, it's paid off and I have no complaints. I just want a new phone. But between this and the Google Fi 50% credit, I'm going to jump on it. I can get a Pixel 4 XL with the bigger hard drive for 350$ after I trade in my current phone. That's INSANE. And I can do the same thing for my boyfriend and get him an upgrade too.

Just keep in mind it is credit and not a rebate so you're looking at like $2,000+tax for phones upfront. It would take me about 1.3 years to burn through $400 of Fi credit at my current usage.
