Feel like you are definitely watching the show wrong if this is your take but yes Succession is awesome.

The Ringer is also hardly the only place calling it good. It got mixed reviews based on the first couple episodes because people were still figuring out the tone but after that it has been pretty much universally praised.

Succession has fewer viewers than the Internet makes it seem because every single media person happens to watch it but its extremely good. The Ringer is also obligated to write 8,000 pieces per season about every Sunday night HBO show.

Yeah, I'm confused by this. Who do you think Entourage was written for, or who do you think Gen-X is?

To me gen Xers are people currently in their early 40s to 50. People around Kendall's age.
Anyway I was being pithy but what I meant was that part of the shows appeal is a type of wealth tourism but instead of showing Young Hollywood money it explores established institutional generational wealth. Like I said, I think it's good and I think the writing and characters are really well fleshed out but a big part of its appeal I think is also the excessive wealth and a more grown up professional balling-ness it offers I get that this folds back into the critique of wealth but I also see how this wealth is fetishized.
And I'm not saying this is really that bad just explaining my one liner post.

Being aspirational rich person porn was like the only point of Entourage though. It wanted you to think those people were cool and root for them. There's some element of "look at this awesome rich person poo poo" to Succession but they usually try to undercut it somehow and ultimately you're not supposed to be identifying with or rooting for the people in it, you're supposed to think they're awful.

Also in spite of their wealth they're all miserable shits with horrible personal lives because they are incapable of forming a relationship that doesn't have an expectation of backstabbing. Several of them are just pathetic all around (Tom, Roman).

This isn't a criticism, but I think you can simultaneously find the everyone in the show reprehensible while still on some level being invested in everybody's personal stakes. When Kendall finally gets a little nod of approval from his dad, I don't think you're expected to feel nothing. After all, filmed media is an empathy machine, to paraphrase Ebert.

Yea I agree with this. It is entirely more sophisticated and thoughtful than I alluded to. Sometimes tho it's fun to just rip off a scorching hot take and see where it goes.

Yes just like godfather /scarface, they're aspirational. I've just listened to people talk about these shows, they all sound similar, and i don't really want to hear more about rich people problem, there was this show called the mentalist, it also had rich people problem, and but a guy there to make fun and arrest them.

Also dirty sexy money, the perfect rich family show, and they were taken down from a loyal employee who they crossed. Will any of these current show offer us that?

Families argue and are petty towards each othrr, so deeppppl.

Its like americans have never experienced a story about royal court intrigue, my mom watch that poo poo all the time, so i guess thats why i have no interest. Its always the 3rd prince.

Once again the wrong HBO show that premiered at the same time is getting the rub (first it was Boardwalk Empire losing to GoT, now its media people not caring about The Righteous Gemstones as much as Succession because they feel seen by the latter), and this is not good at all.

Succession premiered last year, it just leveled up this season. Also both shows have a lot of parallels, oddly enough.

What I came to appreciate about entourage was that the characters easily solved any problem presented. It was a show about smooth sailing with no conflict to be seen

The show they seemingly tried to replace the "Hey targeting every show to 35 year old women is costing us the male demographic" Ballers, is such a piece of poo poo that it's incredible. You get the same instant conflict resolution but with the Rock playing a charisma free straight man and old bald head making sad businessman jokes that are never funny. I just don't understand any of it. The rock is entertaining when he's a jovial bully, it's very hard to take a 300 pound man with 3% body fat seriously, it's like Rich Piana videos with dignity cranked up from 1 to 10

I hate watched most of Ballers because at the time I just needed to have something on in the background when I was doing other work . It may be one of the trashiest shows I've ever seen with some of the worst acting on TV. It does this cringy thing that Entourage did where it tries to seem cool by having a "celebrity" cameo but because the celebrity isn't actually well known outside of certain fanbases they have to spend 90 seconds explaining why they are important.

"Hey, I'm (insert random running back) nice to meet you"
(random running back)?! Didn't you lead the league in rushing last year with over 10 TDS?! You were the heart and soul of the (team)'s offense.

If you're not a Hockey Thread Person, exhibit #3495 of Why We Need Deadspin is that currently the hockey old boys club is disintegrating.

It started when Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock got fired shortly after the Leafs lost yet another game, in part due to this insane save: https://images.app.goo.gl/FG3EEaReaDPuzogw6

Now, normally when a coach gets fired the team looks like they're at a funeral for a while. The Leafs responded by basically saying 'gently caress it, hockey is fun again' and winning. Nobody has come forward to say what a great coach Babcock was, and in fact a whole bunch of stories of what a sour rear end in a top hat he is have been coming out.

But! Former player Akim Aliu disclosed that one of Babcock's proteges, Bill Peters, is not only a sour rear end in a top hat but a racist one! https://twitter.com/Dreamer_Aliu78/status/1199119380774359045?s=19

Peters is 'being investigated' by the Calgary Flames, so that's likely two head coaches down. The Athletic is doing some OK reporting on this, but it could use Petchesky snarking about hockey.

And also! Reformed Hockey rear end in a top hat Daniel Carcillo is now spilling dirt on the Sutters, a family of Alberta rednecks who are hockey royalty: https://twitter.com/CarBombBoom13/status/1199497677802749953?s=19

And I'm reduced to trawling Twitter to find out how hockey is finally purging itself of the good old boys that have plagued it for too long.
