Who invented the skip?
The alternative to the BBC making telly isn't 'no more telly', it's Murdoch and co making telly.

Also the BBC have produced some great stuff over the years. Just steer clear of BBC 1 if you don't like the popular stuff. Micro Men (which I think has been mentioned in this thread before) and the Chernobyl docudrama starring Ade Edmonson, both available on YouTube, for a couple of examples.

I get the hatred at BBC News but the light entertainment stuff is just that, let people enjoy things they like.

Also Doctor Who is great.

Edit: Class 373 is the TOPS designation for the original Eurostar TGV derived trains, now gradually being replaced with more boring Siemens units.

I don't actually blame millenials / zoomers for this because I'm pretty sure a combination of cutting financial education from home economics classes and making personal finance more complex (also making financial advice way harder for proles to access) was a deliberate strategy to encourage consumer debt.

Bad phrasing on my part, it's the tech companies that believe Millenials and Gen Z loving love not owning stuff.

Basically fire everyone in news and start from scratch. It's all poo poo.

e.g. this is the story they have about tree planting: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50578207

quote:

General election 2019: Labour promises to plant two billion trees by 2040

Labour claims it would plant two billion new trees in England by 2040 if they win the general election.

The party is also promising 10 new national parks during its first term, as part of its "plan for nature".

The Tories want to plant 30 million trees a year, the Lib Dems have pledged 60 million if they win power.

Friends of the Earth has hailed Labour's plan - which would mean more than 270,000 trees being planted a day - as the most ambitious of the three.

A cynic might suggest that giving the Labour target over 20 years whilst giving the Tory and Lib dem targets as annual targets, whilst quoting FOTE saying it's the most ambitious, is a deliberate attempt to imply LABOUR WANT THE WHOLE COUNTRY TO BE MADE OF TREES. That it's unreasonable and EXTREME.

Policies don't always map directly (Tories/LD might scale up tree planting in later manifestos or something), but at least breaking down Labour's plans to a per-year planting (100mil per year, which is in line with the Tories/LD) would be an honest comparator. They clearly don't want the public to realise how reasonable and inline with the other parties this policy is.

I'm so loving sick of this. I hate that they keep getting away with this and even if we get a Labour government none of these rats will ever suffer beyond losing their jobs at worst, and slithering off to do PR for some city firm.

e: Donated more money to the party. I'm a trashbag who doesn't have any free time or energy to canvass. Massive respect to those of you who have gone out canvassing/leafleting/pushing the message

I'm going to suggest that some forms of entertainment are objectively better than others, forms which inherently serve to glorify godawful celebrity culture are bad, and should be thrown in the ditch along with their participants.

If you want to cook, maybe we could make it so that everyone has time to do that, or everyone has time to go learn to dance rather than watching some shitheads on the television do it for them. The reason I do not like TV is because it is one half of the process whereby people are robbed of enjoyable activities and are instead sold the process of watching other people engage in them. Same basis as all those lovely shows centered around buying houses or following the lives of lovely rich people, they serve to give people a sense of false inclusion into a society that works to alienate them from ever having access to those things themselves. They are bad for the same reason paup voyeurism shows are bad and military adventurism/cop worship shows are bad, they reinforce lovely aspects of our society.

I agree. Our broadcast TV shouldn't glorify capitalism and the status quo. I reckon non-bootlicking versions of these shows could be made if we put our minds to it :getin:

I'm fairly incredulous that anyone with a half functioning political brain would suggest that those forms of entertainment are important. Because I do expect people to be capable of that sort of critical analysis ITT. And while I'm sure you can, of course, turn your brain off and watch something anyway, if you have to do that it's a point against the thing you're watching because the easier form of that is simply uncritically accepting the messages presented, which is what the majority of consumers will do with any popular medium.

If you personally want to watch trash I'm not gonna stop you but I am going to take issue with the suggestions that we need trash or that trash is actually good. And also that there isn't anything wrong with a lot of people uncritically accepting the premises of trash TV as if it doesn't have any effect on how people think. That's literally the same dumb argument that gamergaters make in response to criticism of the medium.
