You say that, but I just read the Bathroom Remodel thread so I know how that'll end :P

When I say "low-volume", I mean that I do it for both the exercise portion, and the fact that I like to have bonfires (well, maybe more like campfires, idk) from Fall through Spring. I'm not actually heating my house with it, so it's basically just a hobby.

That being said, I have to agree - I think my favorite spring-loaded one was this ancient Russian guy's contraption:

This isn't the video I first saw about it, but it was the only one I could find at the moment.

I do know how to weld, though, so if I ever end up with a house with at least a half-acre plot, I'll likely end up doing some sort of assembly project.

I think as long as your hand is off to the side, (holding the log by the side and nowhere on the top), you would be fine. In other words, if nothing is pinched (kind of a euphemism there) between the log and the axehead, it would be almost impossible to injure yourself because the axehead probably isn't very sharp.

You jest, but if I had enough money to acquire the proper equipment, I would definitely do that as a side-gig. Although like all manual labor, I'm sure it'd tear my body up relatively quickly, so it's hard to say how long I would even put up with doing it as a side-gig.

It's certainly more engaging to me than pushing numbers around in spreadsheets, though, I'll give it that.

you'll probably need less equipment than you think, your region is probably experiencing a mass die-off of street trees and you'll be doing a public service if you assist in storm clean-up. A hand saw and a flat bed to move the wood in, you're golden.

Hell, if you reach out to the public service dept of your city and ask about volunteering for street debrits removal, they'll probably call you when they've got more than they can handle.

Twice this year alone I had to ask a neighbor to haul off a log which was keeping me from getting to the comic store to pick up my monthly hentai crate, it's a real market.

The truck is the real issue. I have assembled a veritable smorgasboard of chainsaws (though nowhere near as impressive as my buddy's), and some friends and I tackled the two dead trees in my yard last month, so . . . yeah, I guess hauling stuff is my big issue at the moment.

You're definitely correct about the trees dying off, though. Fuckin' emerald ashborers.

Edit: I'd not considered contacting my city to see about freelancing on some of their stuff. I figure if I wanted wood that bad, it'd be easier for me to contract the tree places around here and see about having them just dump poo poo in my driveway. It's worked before, for sure. (Typically when they're cutting stuff on my street and I'm like "if you're just gonna try and get rid of that, my driveway is closer than wherever you're dumping it")

like honestly we're past the point where forests are a net carbon negative. sequestration needs to focus on rapid growth grasslands to prevent futher soil degridation at a mimimum, building up to wildflower pasture within 1-2 years.

edit- street pressure and pollution also does a number on conifers, apropos of nothing else. rising water table and increased salinity near the coast, also.

yeah splitting wood owns, I'm honestly a little bit jealous of you. if I had any use for wood I'd be splitting it myself, 100%. bonfires are cool too but, alas, australia

that splitter is a loooot better and I think it's the one I originally saw that warmed me up to the idea. Lot more weight on the head, that weight seems to be balanced with the spring's tension much better, much less flimsy design overall, an actual goddamn platform for the wood, and an automatic safety lock.

old dude nailed it by the looks of it, I'd definitely split wood with that thing

Looking at the map for HWA, that doesn't seem to fit the bill here - I'm basically in the midwest of the midwest. Still, something is murdering conifers at a surprising rate.

My parents' neighbor has a GLORIOUS hard maple of some variety (sugar maple? idk) and every year I tell myself I'm going to go grab a fistful of the seeds, start them in a pot, and transfer the pluckiest one to the back corner of my back yard. Haven't actually gone and done it yet, though.

I really like the two-handed design and the height of the thing; you could really get some force behind it if needed. Also using both hands keeps them out of the line of fire.

PHIZ KALIFA posted:

I guess it's nice to be needed, though I'd prefer if all the trees weren't dying like crazy. You brought up a good point earlier, though; I see all kinds of dead trees on commercial property that aren't really all that big, and if I had a trailer I could probably cut the thing down and be out of there in 20 minutes. Commercial property owners would probably even pay reasonably well if I called 'em up and was like "I can get rid of your dead tree in under an hour, what's it worth to you?"

That is . . . definitely a chart.

Granted, I'm not smart enough to even pretend to comprehend the chart, but I am able to at least identify that it is a chart.

Bonus lol: apparently in Japan the lifecycle involves multiple plant species but in the Western US they were like "gently caress it, YOLO, we'll figure it out even though we're missing half the plants".

Seems like one of those parasites that has such a complicated lifecycle that they should have died out forever ago but Life Found A Way (TM)

Exactly 10 months ago today, I slipped on a patch of black ice and broke my shoulder (proximal humerus fracture, several fragments). In the ER one of the first things I was asked was if I was on my way to work, which I was. Since this is in Germany, this meant that every expense, initial care, household help, operation and stay in hospital, doctor's visits, physiotherapy (still ongoing) and even taxi fees, were covered by the "Berufsgenossenschaft" my employer is a (mandatory) member of. Until now the only fees I had to pay were for some upgrades I chose in the hospital. The BG's main purpose is to get injured workers back into their jobs as fast as possible. This is in the employers' best interests, since they can't just fire and replace an injured worker here, and they also usually recognize the value of experience.

If that is "socialist" health care, hell, hand me a red flag and I’ll sing the International for you.
