My initial feel is that locking it in biomass is just neutral, at best. After everything else 2019 has thrown at us, I’m wary about being hopeful.

I think I was conflating the biofuels and biomass. If I remember right, growing things just to burn them is neutral (ie alcohol as a fuel).

A ton of the greenhouse gases now in the atmosphere were locked in biomatter until we set it free. And realistically, we need to adjust human behavior AND come up with some other means to scrub CO2 and others. We could stop all emissions tomorrow and things will still continue getting worse for the next century because it's such a slow impact. That kind of tech will trickle down into cool poo poo down the road, too. Improved scuba gear, spacecraft/suit scrubbers, etc.

Bio fuel for vehicles and furnaces and stuff is a half-rear end solution. It works out neutral at best if it takes out of the atmosphere what gets put back in after burning. You're basically storing energy in chemical form then releasing it later. A much better approach is electrify the poo poo out of everything and then double dip on the CO2 savings by not producing any with the source of generation or at the point of consumption. This process is aided by kicking the poo poo out of everyone afraid of nuclear power.

The real problem is storing the carbon. Even if we reforested the earth to what it was like during the time of Jesus that would do nothing to solve the issue of what to do with the carbon from fossil fuels. https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=23&t=10 "In 2018, about 142.86 billion gallons (or about 3.40 billion barrels1) of finished motor gasoline were consumed in the United States, an average of about 391.40 million gallons (or 9.32 million barrels) per day." Lets say we start pulling carbon out of the air at the same rate we put it into the air. Where the gently caress do we store 9.32 million barrels worth of carbon every loving day?

There is a process that may be able to turn atmospheric CO2 back into coal. It takes a lot of energy though, so that means we need new nuke plants yesterday. Edit: Also keep coal country dumbasses from deciding we should just burn it again. Casimir Radon fucked around with this message at 19:57 on Nov 28, 2019 |
