As stupid as it was of a question and response, seriously how do you hold computers back?

I would imagine that they'd proliferate for enterprise to enterprise, like FBI and stuff, or maybe even a computer corp that launches comm satellites, but that kind of break through at the enterprise level would be hard to keep from translating to personal use. Those sysadmins are going to realize how useful it is for a bunch of things at home and for personal use. And the restriction of such technology would just raise questions by people in this field of "why can't we get this at home? The internet isn't going to summon a squid monster, that surely isn't what the govt is proposing...."

The whole point of the squid monster was a nuclear option holocaust designed to use psychic force and trauma to terrorize mankind for a generation or more. So people aren't going to be operating rationally in response to that.

Consider Looking Glass, and his bunker, and his alarms, and his reflectoleum hood. You think that guy is gonna install computers and an internet line to his house?

If people can shrug off the squid monster in any fashion, then Ozymandias' "I DID IT!" wasn't true. If he did actually do it, then that means he permanently altered mankind's culture.

People in Watchmen think computers give you cancer. If people in real life can literally let their children die because vaccines, which are obviously safe, are suspected of causing non-fatal autism, then I think people in the Watchmen universe can be willing not to download porn because advanced technology, which was credibly linked to a dude who as far as anyone knew was causing cancer in everyone he got close to, is suspected of causing cancer. Like, Veidt was behind a whole media scare linking Manhattan and cancer. If Bill Gates threw his money behind "cell phones cause brain cancer" and did it via actually causing some people to get cancer, imagine how many people would stop using cell phones!

This is compelling

However, I do wonder how American the scare phenomenon would be. I just don't know if other nations peoples would believe for more than 10 years, especially if it meant taking a loss on potential opportunities and GDP growth acceleration

But, being afraid of the squid globally would be like some sort of religion. Which is believable

Is there ever evidence of computers cause cancer in watchmen? I thought it was just teleportation technology bad, dr Manhattan cancer. But just silicon chips? They're as fine as electric cars

I would also imagine that 20+ years of hard-nosed Nixonism would have had some effect on the academic and research sectors which would have pioneered computer technologies. Manhattan was doing super science but by 1985 it all seemed to be high-concept experimentation with little everyman value.

The taboo towards cellular communications might be from a basic logical line being drawn between them and psychic phenomenon/vulnerability, to the point where the Manhattan-Phones are landline booths with clear video diagrams of how your message is being transmitted.

I'm not sure what cultural touchstones or waves led to cloning being so commonplace, but it might be a weird nihilism and/or bacchanal towards biological life after three million people and God knows how many animals were all butchered in an instant

This is all speculation solely about the USA's technology and culture, but the property always had a very narrow scope; Watchmen is an EXTREMELY American series of fiction

I might be misremembering the graphic novel but didn't the squid's psychic shockwave gently caress with the minds of sensitive individuals across the planet? I imagine having a % of your population wake up screaming every night because the Americans dabbled in fancy technology and went too far would have an impact on most nations' willingness to invest in developing more fancy technologies.

And the restriction of such technology would just raise questions by people in this field of "why can't we get this at home? The internet isn't going to summon a squid monster, that surely isn't what the govt is proposing...."

Technology isn't a linear progression like a game of Civilization where things are always moving forward in a widening fan forever, culture almost entirely dictates what is made and what becomes popular especially once it reaches the point where it requires significant manufacturing like a personal computer does or infrastructure like the internet and cell phones. There is right at this very moment a working vaccine for Lyme disease that just doesn't get made because it's not profitable outside of being sold for veterinary use thanks to America's privatized medical system and anti-vaccine culture. The gorilla glass responsible for smart phones and modern touch screen devices was invented in the 60s and basically just sat in a drawer somewhere until Apple found it looking for materials that would work for the iPhone. To tie into the themes of the show, the entire proliferation of white flour in America was driven largely by xenophobic and racist fears of 'impurities' making their ways into food just as the modern backlash against gluten is driven almost entirely by weird class signifiers and a distrust of or lack of access to modern medicine.

Also the internet is a major tipping point for how information moves and proliferates freely and with the squid incident occurring right on the cusp of the point where internet as we know it took off it would basically destroy that opportunity for the forseeable future since even if you had people deciding it would be nice to have a spreadsheet machine at home there's not much else you could do without a network to connect it to or commercial software and hardware to buy for it. The best you might have is something like the magazines and physical mailing lists of the 80s microcomputer scene in Europe and Japan assuming the government didn't bust those open as soon as they popped up.

KoRMaK

Having computer systems and wanting to share data between those systems to process information was the part I meant. We've always been trying to push that along, even in ancient times when we were just figuring out how to write things down and share them. poo poo, the telegraph and phone both had several people racing to file the patent all who independently got struck with the same idea and had the same materials and parts at the same time.

Doesn't even have to be data like for spreadsheets, could just be stories and messages and general information.

Gorilla glass and those other champagne like discoveries are NOT what I meant.

I often think about how the Romans had all of the individual parts of a steam machine, and in fact had small children's toys that were self-propelled and ran on tiny steam engines, but they just didn't have the same cultural desire for productivity that we do so no one ever thought "huh, I could use this machine to do lots of things!"

Then I think about how I saw a toy car on the 90's Discovery Channel show called Next Step that had a tiny, hydrogen powered car with a little solar powered gas station that just needed you to add water and it would use solar energy to break down the water into hydrogen and oxygen to refuel the toy car...

They can take organs, wash out the cell material, seed the remaining matrix with your stem cells, and grow new, rejection-proof organs.

Also, if you take that matrix (pig bladders work best for this) and just grind up the matrix, the powder regrows severed fingers and probably limbs!

The only thing I can't really reconcile with the books is that the actor simply isn't big enough to be Hooded Justice. HJ is supposed to be this huge bodybuilder who looks like a circus strongman, and the guy they got for the role just looks completely average. It's was especially weird when the journalists at the press conference asked him whether his strength was supernatural when we hadn't seen him display any feats of strength at all.

Everything else you can chalk up to him roleplaying a standard racist white dude to fit in.
