Yeah I’ve also been enjoying it, a shame it’s YouTube only but it makes sense.

Related to this, I’m currently watching Chernobyl. Are there any good podcasts about that or other man made disasters?

lol his "well there's your problem" series is great - I've listened to #5 and #4 already even though I have never thought about that field of engineering etc. I can see how it would be tough to do without the visual helpers but if they could do it audio-only I'd bet this would be pretty successful as a podcast.

There’s a new podcast called Hunting Warhead, was one of those a million other podcasts put out a trailer of it, I usually ignore these but it was affiliated with the CBC :canada: anyways it is decent so far, it’s about child pornography and the deep web/tor so be aware, but a Scandinavian journalist tracks down the creator of the largest child pornography site on the dark web

I gave a quick listen to the something awful episode of the podcast called report this post, and I have to say it's disappointing. They do a bit of an overview of the site and forum history, and highlight some of the sagas we've seen here. The biggeat problems I have with it is the hosts claim to understand FYAD, and they had no mention of puckins.

Edit: I only mentioned it because I found the podcast through a banner ad here.

You should listen to the podcast about making the show Chernobyl, it's got some great stuff in it.

I’ve been listening to the writers detective bureau. Basically its a police officer answering questions from writers about the functioning of the police and everything related to it, so as to be able to write better crime fiction. It’s nice to hear him destroy typical tv and movie cliches.

Also listening to passenger list. It does have its moments, but it feels so on the nose sometimes and drags every hot issue from the past few years into the story, that the suspension of disbelief becomes hard for me.

I ended up trying to find this but only saw a podcast by Rainn Wilson about his Baha’i religious beliefs or something. I’m going to skip it but there’s 38 episodes for anyone interested in that.

No I don't think so, the dollop has one.
You could try to make one, but I don't know if it would get a lot of posts.
I guess you could talk about it here, or is that too much of a derail?
I like BtB, but only in small doses. Some I have to skip because the subject makes me too angry, and sometimes, as been said before here by others, his co hosts are deeply unfunny and don't really do much except act shocked.
But I haven't listened to the last ones so that might have changed?
Also liked his 'it could happen here' podcast.

otoh "funny *and* informative" has become its own podcast category, so maybe a separate thread for the likes of the dollop, btb, and e.g. last podcast on the left, would be cool

I always like when Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross make references to posts from the PYF meme thread the day after they were made in their recordings because it shows that they're smart enough to know that this place is a cesspool and that even if they still read it they absolutely should not touch the poop.

I started listening to this and it's very good, but I have two issues:

1. episode 4, the hyatt regency walk collapse, is actually episode 3 all over again

2. I don't listen to podcasts when I can also watch a youtube of slides. Lots of modern podcast apps (like overcast, the best iOS podcast app) include chapter support, and further include custom artwork by chapter within an episode. So in addition to linking to a youtube of the slides, if they could show a custom image of each slide as it comes up, more people would see the slides while listening.

Incidentally, the creator of overcast made a free tool to help podcasters do just this!

Azathoth posted:

I use Podcast Addict and I think it is pretty good. Actually, it would be perfect, but for me there are two things that really frustrate me:

1) It causes my phone to heat up and basically I can't use any other program while Podcast Addict is running without it taking forever to load and then maybe it crashes. This might just be a problem with my phone, but I did recently do a factory reset, so maybe it's specific to my Android whatever, which I don't even know what version it is, so.

2) You can set the episode to auto-delete downloaded episodes once listened to, but it does not delete it if you manually select the "mark played" option. There is no simple way of deleting the episode without leaving one interface and navigating around to a part where you can manually delete it. What's even weirder about this, is that it is probably the most common complaint I've seen about Podcast Addict, and the devs are bizarrely evasive about it. I'm no programmer, and I understand this poo poo is complex, so it's maybe unreasonable for me to expect them to just have a feature I think should be there, but this complaint has been going on forever, and they've never really addressed it or showed any intention of adding this in future releases. It's just kind of weird.

HEY FOLKS WHO USE AUDACITY! I was looking through some YouTube tutorials about some equalization tricks when I noticed the guy's effects drop-down looks like this:

But meanwhile, mine looks like this:

How do I organize my effects into folders or categories? When the tutorial leaves Audacity to go over some of the effect .dlls, they don't look really any different than what I've got going on. Does this require some Python shenanigans?

Lampsacus
Oct 21, 2008

In my experience, a downloaded full copy of Audacity comes with all those effects. Maybe you have a 'lite' edition?? Otherwise, maybe downloading the .mp3 dll enables them somehow? Sorry I couldn't be further help.

Also, I've used Pocketcasts for many years. It actually low key sucks but I kind of like how lovely it is. Sometimes things start to download and then stop and you have to delete the episodes and start again. But I'm really annoyed at how they didn't enable the premium mode with the skin options for those who bought the app when you had to. Like, yeah reward those who bought the web version but I guess we just bought the app and now its free? Egh.

Well, the effects are there; they're just not grouped into categories. I can enable and disable them, but they all just appear in one long column in which the wheel mouse scroll does not work, so it's extremely cumbersome to click-click-click-click my way down to, say, the wah-wah effect.

There’s a lot of paid promotion / bias / click-seeking in those lists, unless it’s a by-the-numbers most popular one. A lot of them just recap selections from the iTunes top 50 with little snippets of extra info. I know this isn’t super helpful, but I’m someone who gets sick of the same shows quick and am always looking for more, and a real “online peer group” of people who you generally know have the same interests as you is much better than a junior writer cranking out a “best of this month” list that is about the same as every other one. YMMV of course but if you have a subject your're interested in find where those people post and ask there.
