Most enemies taking multiple hits is just kind of a Quake thing. If a mod made monsters die faster it would also need to have its own maps built around that; can't think of anything quite like that off the top of my head.

There's the "Slayer's Testaments" mod meant to channel Doom 2016, but I haven't tried it myself.

Hmm. Arcane Dimensions adds a triple-barrel shotgun as a weapon option, which shifts things a bit. Also there are some maps like Grendel's Blade that are built around multiple quad runs...

...but generally if you want a game with hordes of weak dudes to mow down then Quake won't fill that niche like Doom will.

==========

edit: Random thing it occurred to me to also mention: if you're playing on Nightmare (skill 3), try dropping down to Hard (skill 2). One of the things that Nightmare does is reduce monster flinching, which IMO makes the weapons just feel worse. In any case the original campaign is pretty easy even on Nightmare, and modern custom maps can be pretty hard even on Hard, so Hard difficulty works fine for me.

(I think Copper Quake changes/fixes that behavior in Nightmare, which makes me want to go run the original campaign in Nightmare using Copper one day just to see if it will be my new favorite thing.)

Copper's big thing is that it makes bullets penetrate through dying/collapsing enemies which makes most weapons feel a lot more effective, especially shotguns. That single change brings the SSG from chump shot up to top tier. Try it, Copper is essential for vanilla Quake imo.

Eviternity https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/103425-final-release-eviternity/

I dunno why, but some source ports don't load the demo map when you start up the game and instead use a quake logo background or something.

Then I can confirm: Quakegasm as a source port works great, but it doesn't run a demo or have a menu theme song. Which sucks, because that theme song is easily one of the coolest things about the game!

What did people think of Hedon? I bought it on sale and it seems super janky. Ignoring some of the eyebrow raising art, in the very first level I keep dying to wonky platforming and the monsters are far too fast to feel any good fighting. Anything good further on in it?

I also bought Rogue Shooter which looked awkward, but it is actually amusing. It's a semi randomized blake stone/wolf3d with no mouse aiming or verticality, but I found it fun enough for a couple bucks. Janky, but fun janky. The shooting is surprisingly satisfying for the simplicity of the game.

I liked Hedon but it’s definitely weird feeling (in several ways) and takes a while to get interesting. It’s closer to Strife than other Doom stuff, it’s more atmosphere/story based and that atmosphere is “erotic Arx Fatalis fanfiction”. I like the exploration and puzzling and eventually the combat gets more interesting with some neat arena battles. Definitely not for everyone though.

Unless something changed from the original free release where is there a place to die in the first level platforming? Can’t say I found the enemies fast either, they move at regular imp speeds.

Really impressive work and very Arx Fatalis-y level design. I love the look and pacing but I’m still hesitant on paying money because I may have looked at the creator’s twitter which is always a mistake.

I remember not liking it, but it's amazing how much I disliked it playing it now. Some of that was Hard difficulty and that was truly a mistake. The episodes were better, and ep2 was the first time I cared about any of the story.

HL1 was enjoyable. Xen isn't great but I would rather replay it then any of hl2. Part of that surly is me knowing and remembering more of hl1 and actually having beaten it more then once. It definitely has problems but it's actually an FPS.

It's only the rare women models that are bad but even then it's no worse than a lot of fantasy chainmail bikini art. The environment art is great, it is one of the prettiest TCs I've seen. Very stylish, a little comic-booky, and reminds me of like "what if Dungeon Master/Eye of the Beholder/Westwood made a Doom game." All the weapons and chunky and feel good, there's a lot of *oomph* to everything. Very good use of momentum and big clockwork levels with smart secrets and poo poo.

I really loved the free version, Hedon and Ashes are what got me into Doom this year, but yeah don't give money to a transphobe.

I played some Doom II and am fully healed once more

EDIT: Speaking of which, I recently picked up the BFG Edition of Doom 3 for like $6 and played through it for the first time since the game came out in 2004. Despite always having a copy of Doom II installed with a bunch of WADs and mods on every computer I own (and playing them regularly) I actually found myself bouncing between the copies of Doom/Doom II/Doom 3 that came with the BFG Edition. It was kind of surprising how, after 8 or 9 hours of Doom 3, I found myself mentally preparing to get constantly ambushed in Doom and Doom II--even though I've played them a million times and most of the time nothing actually happens. I know it's beating a dead horse but I had forgotten just how hard Doom 3 leans on teleporting/closeting enemies on the path to and from objectives, likely due to the cramped environments that don't really enable larger groups of enemies (and perhaps performance considerations with circa-2004 PCs trying to handle larger groups?) I just wrapped up both the base game and ROE on Veteran difficulty and the gameplay loop was exhausting by the end of it all.

Also I felt like the weapons were kind of odd. You have three automatic weapons: The assault rifle, chaingun, and plasma rifle...but they all have roughly the same magazine capacities (like the assault rifle, the chaingun has 60 rounds per "belt" for some reason, while the plasma rifle had 50) which felt like an odd choice. The assault rifle and chaingun were hitscan while the plasma rifle hit harder with slower projectiles...but in the game's tight quarters, the difference was effectively nonexistent. Ultimately I used them all interchangeably, since ammo wasn't usually a problem for any of them.

And yeah I've concluded that the shotgun is a wet fart. It works alright at point-blank range, but the damage drop off past 6 or 7 feet is comical. Fodder enemies like the cherubs/trites/ticks regularly took 2 or 3 shotgun blasts at 8-10 paces, which is bizarre. Seems like they could have done something else to balance the shotguns with the other weapons in the game's tighter quarters, but instead they let you carry over 300 shells and load them two at a time--except they're filled with salt or something I guess.

Doom 3 was for the most part a solid (if very different) entry in the series, but yeah what they did to the shotgun was unforgivable.

GUI
Nov 5, 2005

I've said this a billion times but Doom 3 would be a significantly better game if they had relied less on teleporting, reduced the time of monster teleport growl animations, and tuned weapons and enemy variety better. The shotgun is the best weapon for most of the game due to the fact that the majority of enemies you face until Hell are Imps so you can simply run up to them as they teleport and shotgun them in the face for an instakill, this extends to when the game decides to use Cherubs and the teleporting monsters as well due to how weak they are. The atmosphere of the game is still pretty good over a decade later (human models aside) but the combat is an area where TCs and custom maps made better use of what id created for it.

One of the first things I did on Doom 3 was to edit the values of certain weapons and gave the shotgun a tighter spread, just by that it helps A LOT. Made it reload one shell at a time. I think it has something like a 25º cone spread or something as base value which is hilariously high making your pellets hit everywhere but the enemy past 4-5 meters. Just by making it something like a 8º cone spread helped and was a good weapon again. Shame that trying to do that on the BFG edition is a chore the way they coded it.

Cream-of-Plenty

I guess I just find it particularly interesting that you can carry ~328 total shotgun shells, which is about half the total ammunition you can carry for weapons that fire 8-10 rounds per second such as Assault Rifle, the Chaingun, and the Plasma Rifle...and a huge glut of buckshot that you'd almost never get through in average play (while continuing to pick up more ammo). Seems like they expected the typical player to expend 3 or 4 shots on each imp.

Remember that BFG edition added more ammo in, which borks balance even worse than it was.

As an aside, even though Doom3 was trying for a horror atmosphere and it largely fails after the first few minutes, I really do enjoy its aesthetic a lot more than Doom4. Especially in their renditions of Hell.
