to be perfectly honest, english usage in japanese is where i hit a huge wall of contextual understanding that i miss because i have my own english associations to the words, which are very often entirely different associations in japanese. ive seen loanwords explicitly stated to sound modern, and explicitly stated to be old fashioned like this (not just here) and i honestly have no idea what to put as a functional equivalent in english whenever they talk about these things explicitly
