Yeah he was supposed to be replaced by a stop motion/puppet thing but that didn't pan out and Lucas wasn't even responsible for the IV Jabba scene anyway so figuring it out wasn't a priority

There are so many clunky plot contrivances in ANH, like Obi Wan having bullshit tasks to do on the Death Star because he can't do comedy schtick with Han and the gang, or C3PO announcing he's going to go to sleep during Obi Wan and Luke's conversation about the Jedi because he doesn't have any lines. I love it.
