What kind of specific stenciling did you have in mind, like elaborate technical patterns, or more like camouflage blobs, or just putting a stripe on something? Most masking work is done with an airbrush. You can mask off stuff for regular brushing, but it's still gonna look kinda ragged and hand done, so you'd need to make a cost-benefit calculation to see if it's worth your time and effort. It will pretty much always take more time than you expect, but it also looks great when you do it right. The best advice for masking stuff is to get your mask in place - you've got your stencil ready and taped down, or you've cut a symbol out of tape or whatever. Then, take some gloss varnish and go over the interior edges of your mask. This'll help seal the thing so your paint doesn't leak out under the mask. If you're feeling really enterprising, you can paint another layer of whatever your base coat is to really seal it up.

I sent an email to Tamiya USA suggesting they make a line of stand alone engine models in like 1:4s scale for some of the popular Japanese engines like Toyota 2JZ, Nissan RB26DETT and SR20, Mazda Rotary and others like that. It would be cool if they needed assembly and were made of the same plastic their car models are made of so you could paint and customize them like painting the valve covers. They wrote me back and said they would forward my suggestion to Tamiya Japan

I would love to see some 1:12 scale cockpits. Italeri made one for the F-104 Starfighter and one for the F-16 but that's all I've seen.

Hey do you folks think I would have any issues using Testors spray lacquer over Tamiya spray primer? I have a can of Testors Go Mango spray (its a Mopar color) and I'm doing a Revell 69 Dodge Dart so it would go perfectly with it except I only have Tamiya primer.

Is enamel thinner the same as mineral spirits? Do I need pigment fixer for AK pigments

So could I just use white spirit in lieu of pigment fixer for AK pigments?

# ? Dec 10, 2019 21:04 |

Sort of. Pigment fixer is basically just a really thin enamel matt varnish. Plain white spirit will do the job in a pinch but it'll rub off instantly if you touch it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVw3Ylsa7Yw&t=1167s

Star Destroyer is starting to come together. The drilling of endless holes. Shield Domes Even got a tiny Blockade Runner to go in the landing bay, and a brace of TIE Fighters. Not sure what I'll do with the TIE's, maybe one or two in the secondary landing spaces, and a patrol or two alongside the SD mounted on black wire. They're so tiny though that might be impossible.

Van Dis posted:I'll be very interested to see how the LED strips end up looking through all those holes. Nice work so far! I actually went with the cheaper, older revision kit that didn't come with LED strip lighting. I'm going to do fiberoptics, with a few small portions of LED strip to light the landing, cargo, and trash bays that came as part of PE addon set I bought. LED strip would've obviously been easier, but I really wanted the experience of doing fiberoptics, just like they did back in 1977.

Vaporware posted:Crossing posted to the Gundam thread, but does anyone know what this filtering technique is called? It's like a rainbow undercoat, and it's neat but I don't understand the purpose? It's just a form of preshading with a handbrush that allows you to break up translucent colors like white and light grey, since you can't really do black basing without an airbrush*. The idea is similar to an oil dot filter but this time it's below the basecoat. *You can, but it takes an ungodly amount of effort to do it well.
