General-Admiral
The last part of Frankie Boyle's pre-election write-up was pretty uplifting, somehow:

quote:

You won’t be surprised to learn that I won’t be voting Tory on Thursday, for much the same reasons that I won’t be spending the day kicking children and pensioners into traffic. It’s depressing to think how many polling stations are in schools, and how many people will vote Conservative after walking past a motivational rainbow. As we saw in Stanley Johnson’s Pinocchio gaffe, there is a problem with our elites programming their traumatised children with the idea that they are born to rule. It becomes almost impossible, as a class, to hide your contempt. It’s difficult to keep lying convincingly about things you’ve convinced yourself your audience are too stupid to notice.

This current iteration of Conservatism, a kind of mutant nationalism that insists all our infrastructure has to be owned by other countries, has nowhere to go but into an asset-stripped, deregulated wasteland. I don’t know how anyone votes for that, or what happens after they do. British people don’t get on well enough to form militia.

I don’t want to end on a note of pessimism. Instead, I’d like to share with you my two favourite quotes. The first, is a really famous one. Kurt Vonnegut asked his adult son what he thought the meaning of life was, and his son replied: “We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.” The second is what David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, said about the ending of the final episode:

“Well, what Tony should have been thinking, I guess, and what we all should be thinking – although we can’t live that way – is that life is really short. And there are good times in it and there are bad times in it. And that we don’t know why we’re here, but we do know that 20 miles up it’s freezing cold, it’s a freezing cold universe, but here we have this thing called love, which is our only defence, really, against all that cold, and that it’s a very brief interval and that, when it’s over, I think you’re probably always blindsided by it.”

Twenty miles up, it’s a freezing cold universe, we only have the human connections we make here, nothing is permanent, and love is our only defence. I suggest we all vote accordingly, and try to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.

Good post this.

Come what may, this election is not the end of the world, who knows, a hard Brexit may well lead to the land of milk and honey the Tories are promising.

It's not bloody likely though. Vote Labour.

Clifton Suspension Bridge has some really cool views and it's not far from Leigh Woods if you wanna go walk around nature. We've currently got the Christmas markets going on in Broadmead if you're into that kind of thing and St. Nick's Markets has a whole load of cool nifty little shops that are worth having a gander in. The Hatchet is a great shout for drinks, I'd also recommend the Old Duke and the Bell. As for food I just went to Flour and Ash yesterday and had the most banging pizza I've had in ages.

I dunno how I plan to deal with the election stuff as I went into '17 thinking things were probably doomed and may was going to squeak through but then the exit polls happened and there was much mirth

This time round it feels more serious and stressful but I know I want to be up and around to watch the squirrel killa and chuckacuktig lose their seats, and as ever I will be glad of the ukmt filter and what I'm sure will be some memorable times however it goes.

I think this is a great glimpse of Tory mentality. While NHS rules prevent profiteering entering ots books, the managers and ministers themselves often take gifts in return for their service. The US healthcare service is fantastic at this, having long done it in the form of flying decision makers out to luxury resorts, giving them a presentation in the form of a huge buffet, entertainment etc and promising them a ton of consultancy work afterwards.

So this is Mancock trying to buy himself a consultancy when this is all over, and sod the consequences in terms of privacy issues.

Hmm. I reckon leftist candidates should be automatically put at the top of the ballot to help make up for the systemic biases against them. Do you think we would have any luck making this argument? :shobon:

Or maybe we would just see a resurgence of Strasserism to claim that top spot :gonk:

I feel your pain. All of my bags were in those kooky interlocking courts and gardens arrayed around central fields with cuts and snickels shooting around in a kind of suburban mandala. A lot of the designs round there are quite pleasant, but I now feel horribly sorry for the posties. The first bag I would have been sunk without a bunch of kids on bikes who kept popping up to point me towards the right number. They'd clocked me haplessly wandering around trying to work out why I'd suddenly gone from 72 Snaketwist Gardens to 3 Theseus Court and showed a bit of socialist compassion in action. I thought I had a decent sense of direction!

By the end of the second bag though I'd somehow tuned in to the minds of the planners and was cruising through with only occasional 'gently caress's sake where's the letterbox? why is this the backs now?!?!' incidents. Think I might start organising my entire life around numerical chaos theory actually.

:shobon: Um, hello. I'm trying to deliver election letters but I can't figure out how the house numbers work here. Could you maybe help me out?

Which party are you with?

:shobon: Um, Labour.

Oh, sure! You want that direction. The numbers go 11-14, 23-39 (no 31), 5-8, 31, 9-10, 1-4. You'll get the hang of it!

:smug: What ho, chaps! Could you do one a solid as well? I am with the Conservative and Unionist party.

La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo

On election night I'll be getting a curry and lots of beers, regardless of the exit poll result I will slog through til about 1 or so. I reckon either way it goes I'll be a bit emotional - it's a strange way to end the decade really, I was unemployed for a while, I've moved house every year since 2008, I've watched as places were hosed by austerity and have worked a bunch of jobs with different communities and seen the impact what Tories have done.

I'm optimistic. The polls are always wrong, old media caters to older people and more importantly - all things come to an end. People are ready for change, they want it, can almost taste it. So many people out canvassing, registering to vote, talking to those close to them. The media will always stick to the status quo and suppose the most obvious chain of events, but it is the death throes of a dying medium - it is in those final moments they will act like a caricature of themselves in a desperate attempt to appear as if they can do anything to stop it.

This is the last week of the Tories being in power.

On Marr they were also quite dismissive of labour now being a “party of the young” not the “working class”, yet somehow the statistics guy they had on neglected to mention that the inflection point between lab/con was 45 years old, those with families and working poor?
