OwlFancier posted:Most places, as far as I know, do canvassing even outside of an election. If you really like it you can probably do it all year round. Definitely. We have Senedd elections in 2021, local town and council elections in 2022 and there are various by-elections (usually town or county council from time to time). Our CLP canvas all those plus in between times just because - there's a 'why don't we ever see you lot when there's not an election' vibe in some areas, so we make sure they can't say that round here. Depending where you live, OP, there may be town or county council elections, mayoral elections, Senedd or Scottish Assembly elections all in the pipeline. Oh the other thing about it is - from 2015-2017 we had election after election in my neck of the woods. Then there was 'nothing' bar a couple of town council by-elections and attendance at our monthly meeting (CLP & branch) absolutely plummeted. We weren't quorate several times. Membership was trickling away whether brexit or anti-semitism concerns. Those who DO attend meetings were getting really down about it. Well of course, with the election, suddenly there are heaps of volunteers all over the CLP turning out for stalls, canvassing, leafleting, envelope stuffing and various other tasks. I really think the meeting format doesn't lend itself to enthusiastic participation and it needs something like an election to galvanize people. I guess because I spent almost 30 years in Corporate 'agenda, minutes of last meeting, yadda yadda, any other business' is one of those things I just put up with. There's one activist comes to our meetings who says it's all really odd and she doesn't get it or understand it. She's a get-out-there-and-do-something don't sit around discussing minutiae of policies, protocols, motions and so forth. She's probably more typical. I think it is sad that this is one of the things that has stuck. Saying that though I think I was able to persuade one of my co-workers to vote Labour tonight by understanding her views on anti-semitism whilst also saying how poo poo Boris has been and how much good Labour can do. She was at least never going to vote Tory or Lib-dem so that is good. All we can do is hold on, I hope we succeed. All power to the Soviets (as in the workers councils, not the imperialist power) and I can only hope that we see us all through the other side.
