Also a lot of the really old ones predate radio so you literally needed people to already know the tune because factory workers were not generally musically literate. So they use things like john brown's body, or old christian hymns. Things people would already know and which were already well suited to choral singing by people with minimal practice.

Man, you guys fill my heart with courage, not gonna lie. I couldn't be more grateful for your posts of positivity and solidarity. It's a trying time but we're almost there. Good luck to us all. I reckon I'll be doing a democracy in the morning before work and then getting nice and toasted in the evening, find some good coverage and stick with it til the exits start to come in, if it isn't too late. At least being toasted will help me get to sleep through the anxiety of not knowing the final result. Gonna take some courage to check when I wake, that's for sure.

So I've just submitted a complaint to the BBC about Kuenssberg. I knew bookmarking the complaints page would come in handy one day. Also, from their complaints page: Politics Live, BBC Two, 11 December 2019 We’re receiving complaints that postal votes were mentioned during the programme. To register a complaint visit this BBC Complaints page. lol

Personally I'd rather he shouted at him, or waved pictures of people sleeping on the streets, or accused him of murdering hundreds of thousands of people. Corbs is great, but I do think part of him is looking forward to standing down and getting a bit of his life back. His whole thing about 'kinder, gentler politics' is a great aspiration but utterly unsuited for a time when our opponents are committing wholesale economic murder.

You see the same thing with football chants - This is mainly because almost nobody actually writes songs designed to be sung en masse by amateurs any more, of course - 50,000 pissed up Cockneys aren't going to be able to sing a Kanye West tune (yes, I'm showing my age by that being the only contemporary artist I can name off the top of my head) because he wrote that for him to sing on his own, but give them a schmaltzy Tin Pan Alley waltz - written, of course, for the music hall crowd to sing along with - and all of a sudden a bunch of blokes who think drinking non-carbonated alcohol is dangerously effeminate are bellowing about pretty bubbles at the top of their lungs.

That's my last night of canvassing done. Persuaded a couple of Con waverers to either Lab or not voting, another mini victory! And the response at my final door went like this: Me: <after a quick bit of chatter> So can we count on your vote tomorrow? Auld gadge: *leans in close and looks around conspiratorially* Well, how shall I put it, young man. If I had a blowtorch... Me: *grits teeth internally through rictus smile* Auld gadge: ...I'd burn the Conservatives off those ballot papers. How anyone can vote for that racist and his bunch of Nazis... I'll have to stop otherwise I'll swear, but...you've got our votes. Let's chuck those charlies out tomorrow. Kuenssberg was on my car radio desperately peddling the usual apathy and despair. Tonight it didn't stop me smiling. I'll be out there with my leaflets in the darkness of the labyrinthine estates at half six tomorrow, before work. The rich cunts and the melts and the handwringers and the hacks, these people think we're a blip, a bad dream, a full moon cult - that we'll get disheartened and dissipate like mist. But hope ain't going back in the box. I'm never up to date with UKMT and p much just post occasional white noise, but gently caress it. Thanks for helping push me out there, you ol commies, and... Good luck, everyone.

I'm conflicted, because I also think the angry rhetoric would be justified and possibly work better, it certainly does on me. But then I also know full well that I should not be in charge because the reason the rhetoric works is because I'm just angry and full of spite, and that's not the kind of person you want in charge. I want Corbyn as PM, but whether he can get there I'm less sure of. goddamnedtwisto posted:You see the same thing with football chants - Mhm. It takes a particular kind of song to be singable by anyone, or at least where you can join in on the chorus, which is why we look back to old songs. With the death of community comes the death of communal song. Where community endures, so do songs, and a lot of them are still old ones because they're good and they work. You sing them because you learned them, passing it down the years.
