Using the word idiot in the historical context, it's not even an insult. People just being fuckin' willfully ignorant. The new plan for the UK left is a resurgence after Brexit wrecks the economy and maybe rejoining the EU in 25 years when the xenophobes have all died off.

oxford_town posted:it does somewhat support the argument that the Momentum-backed offensive strategy was flawed If it is due to demographic support shifting then I don't know that strategy matters. It is quite possible that people over 30 just don't believe things can get better, on the whole, and will vote with low information based on what the news tells them to do. The press ran an absurdly anti-labour campaign and it seems to have worked on labour's traditional support base, despite labour's policy being wholly in their favour. It is possible that traditional labour voters just want the tories in a red rosette, because decades of poison by the press and previous governments have rendered them unable to conscience anything else.

People are asking how anyone could vote for Boris and the best answer I can give is "They weren't." It was a vote for brexit and a vote against Corbyn . You could have replaced Boris with a fish in a bucket and I feel like the results wouldn't have changed much. I'm feeling woozy like I just took a punch to the head, and very bitter towards current political system atm.

Zakutambah posted:I just do not understand people. Leaving JC to the side; how do you look at Boris, his performance up until now, his utter lack of empathy, his complete refusal to talk on any real policy over the campaign... how do you look at that, and think "yes, that person represents a party of values I support"? Nothing personal about it, just looking at him fumbling around in any professional role; mayor, politician, foreign sec, prime minister. Absolute clown shoes. I do wonder if a big part of the difference between tonight and 2017 is that a lot of Brexit-supporting men who couldn’t bring themselves to cross over to vote for an austere, aloof, smartly-dressed, matronly woman did so eagerly for a laddish hyper-masculine figure with more or less the exact same policies.

I guess I'm one of those lovely posters that just turn up when things look bleak but honestly I was just looking for places to follow it. I'm Scottish but lived in Norway these past 17 years. So I didn't get to vote even. Have been holding off on Norwegian citizenship but I guess I'd better get that ball rolling. Looking for silver linings here, if they can be found. Increased possibility of Scottish independence is all I got.

Saith posted:No, the first thing the Tories did was rule out a referendum. The only way for independence is an ''''''''''illegitimate''''''' referendum or a unilateral declaration. The mass amounts of SNP seats being won mean that they'll be able to make it a constant issue. If the Tories refuse any form of a referendum, then it will turn it into a constant sticking point and basically doom that union. Not only that, but it would probably kick off similar independence momentum in Northern Ireland. In ten years, the UK could very well be reduced to just England and Wales. Which to be fair, apparently doesn't bother many Brits.
