People have been convinced that the NHS is struggling because socialised healthcare is an inherently bad idea. Not because it's been systematically bled dry and sold off for the last decade.

Considering how gutted the NHS has been, I doubt it will have any effect on public opinion, as the brex/con voters are going to believe the campaign that healthcare in america is better ( and actually was even better before obama) and will roll along with it, maybe in 20 or 30 years the uk will wake up but I am not sure.

As an American I’m so, so sorry but this clearly shows you have no idea of the hell of our healthcare system if you believe no one will notice the NHS, as gutted as it is, changing to the living nightmare of privatized healthcare. I really, really hope you guys never will.

My God, it's full of Horatios!

Well this is a loving disaster isn’t it. Takeaways, assuming exits are as accurate as usual:

* We are now committed to Brexit. It may not actually be the hardest of hard Brexits, because Boris now has a working majority and isn’t vulnerable to the ERG or other pressure groups.

* Turbo-neoliberalism looks to be on the cards. Expect lowered taxes, pro-corporate policies being enacted, part-dismantling of the NHS, support for landlords, maybe removal of IHT, blanket support for gig economy.

* That will bleed in to hurting the poorest people in the country: more food banks, more poverty, more misery.

* Racism and hatred of the other will be further normalised. The UK is about 40% gammon, and with a result like this they have recast the whole country in their image. Whole country is a giant Toby Jug.

* Foreign policy, we’re going to align with the US.

Rebecca Long-Bailey is the thread favourite I think, but McDonnell would have been my pick over Corbyn all along.

We're not likely to get a chance to find out for at least another 5 years. I'd honestly not be surprised to see Boris join Trump as Presidents for Life at this point.

Reflecting on the meaning of the last presidential election, I have decided at this point in time that Mr. Nixon’s landslide victory and my overwhelming defeat will probably prove to be of greater value to the nation than would the victory my supporters and I worked so hard to achieve. I think history may demonstrate that it was not only important that Mr. Nixon win and that I lose, but that the margin should be of stunning proportions… . The shattering Nixon landslide, and the even more shattering exposure of the corruption that surrounded him, have done more than I could have done in victory to awaken the nation… . This is not a comfortable conclusion for a self-confident — some would say self-righteous — politician to reach….
— George McGovern in the Washington Post: Aug. 12th, 1973

Johnson is a crook and a liar. He, like Nixon, cannot elude fate forever.
McGovern was wrong. It made people cynical about politics and got Carter elected, but it set the stage for Reagan doing the same things and for the left to fracture and fight amongst themselves. 45 years later I think it's fair to say it didn't awaken the nation, it awakened politicians to what they could get away with and what things they have to do to get away with more and made people less invested in politics and open to politicians talking about the value of smaller government. It's a stunningly wrongheaded and complacent quote that values the comfort of believing in a just world rather over the realization that you need to fight harder for what's right.

The tory position on a lot of things is, in fact, that there aren't problems, that any problems are actually labour's fault, and the tories will fix the problems. And people for some reason believe this in spite of the evidence to the contrary, likely because the press simply accepts the claims at face value.

If it's any consolation, achieving the nomination threshold for a leadership election is pretty easy with only 190 MPs.

Seriously though, now we have to encourage the membership not to give in to despair and elect somebody like Jess Phillips or Keir Starmer who will take the party back to the right and immediately lock the membership out of power.

That's the thing really, there's one thing just watching the news on and off and voting Boris Johnson because you think he's funny, it's another having thousands of people going out every night for a month knocking on doors in the rain and really trying for something different. Whether or not it is a 'majority' it is the passion that drives change. I don't want to queue for five years for another chance of being hosed - I'd rather be one that does something about it.

I was taking this to mean that they had sucked enough votes from the Tories that some other party had won, as opposed to the Brexit party winning that seat.

Corbyn's "negative image" is completely manufactured by the UK press though.
