I can't wait to entertain you.
Current rumor is that it's an animated show, which would explain how it could be coming out so soon but not much is known about it.

So having read the first issue of Rise of Kylo Ren, it's kind of crazy how much this one issue retcons:

Ben doesn't destroy the temple, it just blows up (?)

Ben doesn't kill the other Jedi students (at least now) and goes out his way to not hurt them.

The other Jedi just leave Luke for dead to hunt down Ben instead of trying to help Luke.

It seems to happen prior to the events of Bloodline given the references to Leia still being a senator on Hosnian Prime.

I have to say, I am really not liking how much this comic at least so far leans so heavily into "Ben was innocent, if only everyone else wasn't so mean to him he wouldn't have turned into a fascist dictator" which at least in the first issue is where I sensed where this is going....

That being said, it is kind of crazy that one comic issue has almost more backstory for Kylo and Snoke than all three sequel movies. Kind of makes me wonder how much of this was developed for the movies or how much of this was someone at Lucasfilm just told Charles Soule "okay the movies are over, now you can go wild and fill in the blanks."

I definitely think we're gonna see some more context on the events at the temple over this series; there's a whole chunk of missing time between the confrontation between Ben and Luke and the actual fire at the temple that we haven't seen exactly what went down during. I think it's gonna be a lot like that flashback series in TLJ where we're not getting the full story on the first telling.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it went full Rashomon. Just because Charles Soule is usually, well, better than this.

My speculation (which I'll spoiler tag in case is correct) is that Ben does cause the fire and explosion, but it's not a conscious act on his part, it's just raw lashing out of power. Maybe even in the moment he pulled the hut down on Luke he accidentally blew a power reactor at the temple or something. He'll be culpable for the deaths....but he didn't go in and Order 66 them

Also, it starts out showing that in order to join the Knights of Ren, you have kill someone important to you.

Chairman Capone

I don't know who that could be for Ben, though. We know it's not anyone in his family, and if it's one of these random Jedi who have only just been introduced and who he doesn't seem that close to it won't really feel all that impactful. Though I am fully expecting him to kill them... though it would also be a bit of a lark if it turns out they all just go off on their own and were just doing their thing throughout the sequel movie era like all those other Jedi who survived Order 66 and did nothing.

I bet it will be something like a reverse Crait, Ben thinking he's killing Snoke as a sacrifice but it's only a phantom or the like.

Pretty much. It stays far enough behind that they obviously want you to get the newest stuff, but they've got a lot. I've been re-reading the KOTOR comic.

Somewhat predictably, the latest Star Wars movie has renewed my interest in the franchise. If I wanted to read some good Star Wars comics, are there any particular recommendations for a newcomer?

The Marvel stuff has all been decent to great. I’d recommend the first volume of Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra for sure. The main Star Wars series has been good through most of its run, too.

Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra are both great. The main title is fine but I feel like I'm kinda done with reading about Luke/Leia/Han/etc so your mileage may vary. If you liked the KOTOR game, you might also did the KOTOR comic which Marvel also has.

Also some decent one-offs include Lando, Obi-Wan & Anakin, and Han Solo. All a mix of great art, interesting world-building, and/or fun space hijinks.

In Land's defense... he also used pro wrestling. Kurt Angle in a very specific instance I can think of.

I found that art so off-putting I stopped reading, nice to see it appeals to someone though!

I always got a giggle out of the Star Wars: Union comic, where the artist didn’t use photo references but it’s really, really blatantly obvious that certain characters resemble certain famous actors.

In my experience, John Cassaday was the best without looking like he was staring at a paused movie still on the other monitor. Also he's John Cassaday so he probably didn't even need to.

Then you get Salvador Larocca who is not so good at it.

Yeah laroccas work looks like he just screencaps the movies and photoshops heads onto his panels, its not good lol

Like I even kinda understand the impulse to do it that way since you are basing the art off real people, but you still have to put in the effort to make it look decent

For the super curious, there's a whole Gizomod article about it: https://io9.gizmodo.com/theres-something-off-about-marvels-star-wars-comic-1822347742

It's absolutely got that light-boxed 'these characters are obviously not looking at each other' thing going on and it really brings the comic down. I'd much prefer somebody like Kev Walker over on Aphra at the same time.

Yeah, Vader becomes Darth Vader Co-Starring Doctor Chelli Aphra pretty early on and it's worth the ride. Obligatory if you haven't read Aphra and like her in Vader, you should read her ongoing.
