quote:

Less than seven minutes into an NHL game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Dallas Stars, Rich Peverley of the Stars was sitting on the bench waiting to return to the ice when his heart stopped beating. He was in cardiac arrest.

Peverley slumped over and horrified teammates screamed for help. Within seconds, two athletic trainers carried Peverley down a tunnel and into the hallway leading to the dressing room. Players and fans were confused by the commotion, which halted the game. What they didn't realize was that a far more high-stakes contest was playing out: the race to save Peverley's life.
...
When it did, Peverley said he wanted to go back into the game. He had no idea what happened.

"I thought I'd just passed out," he said. "Then I noticed how scared everybody was."

They were so shaken that the game was postponed.

There was a guy whose gimmick was posting as Cookie Monster from Sesame Street until he was told to he'd be banned if he ever mentioned cookies again.

He was banned in some tech support thread for suggesting someone clear their browser cookies.

There’s a great article about the trainer who saved his life. A PTSD rattled Vietnam vet who calmly walked up, stuck his hand into the dude’s neck and pinched the artery while moving him off.

Also, the fact that he lived was down to the trainer being on the near side to the accident. If he was on the other bench he would’ve died.

And the only reason he lived was because the athletic trainer for the Sabres was a medic in Vietnam so had seen injuries like that before and immediately reached into the gash in his neck and pinched off the severed artery.

Also a reminder that goalie masks, aka "the sole layer of protection between an 80-mph disc of solid rubber and your face" didn't start seeing use until the late 50's. The NHL started in 1917.

Hell, helmets in hockey weren't mandatory until 1979 and they still left in a grandfather clause so the older players could choose to keep playing without them.

And a bunch of those old timers still claim that it was safer with out helmets. I can get the argument for football helmets and pads making the sport more dangerous, but hockey players are always getting hit in the face/head with sticks/pucks and there's no way around it. Even before all the big pads there were people laying out in front of slapshots to block the shot.

That may actually be the case for football, since helmets don't do a lot to prevent concussions but having them makes players more likely to lead with their head. In hockey, where there's a frozen piece of rubber zipping around, absolutely not. Even the helmet+visor is still risky, I remember seeing someone get a puck to the face from an errant slapshot and it completely shattered his eye socket. He's lucky he didn't go blind.

I remember they started going all over the forums and eventually wandered into a "help with relationships" thread in E/N and were explaining to someone that their boyfriend was just having trouble committing, unlike Rival Team who were 100% committed to winning and being the best team in history.
A mod eventually gave them a reprieve for having more than completed the spirit of the arrangement.

The first hockey game I saw live was match between the Kingston Frontenacs and the Peterborough Petes, and the grudge match between these two elite teams was so intense that a petes player got bodyslammed through the glass around the boards and showered the front row in plexiglass shards. An older guy with a shaved head got wheeled out on a stretcher because it shredded his scalp and they were mopping blood as the game continued. Good sport.
