There was a secret ENDGAME zone in SMW made up of nuclear powered platforming super levels that’s required utter mastery of the game to beat, I’d put them about on par with White Palace, but again, I only beat White Palace by combining charms to negate the gruesome walk backs and skipping about 20% of it with clever crystal dashing

IIRC, without looking it up and not having played it in 15+ years, every world had both a Yoshi color to set free and secret level that was unlocked by finding secret exits out of Boo Castles. These would lead to warp pipes that would take you to one level of the secret world, and if you beat that level it would take you to the next level in the loop of 8. So it didn’t matter when you found the secret levels in your playthrough, because once you unlocked one you could basically access all of them, except some of them needed very specific Yoshis or combinations of Feathers and Fire Flowers or whatever, so often you’d beat 1-2 levels and then go back because you didn’t have red yoshi yet or something.

If you beat the secret bonus levels it literally redecorates the entire game to look like Halloween and all the koopas dress up as Mario.

People are allowed to like different things. Celeste got me into platformers, and I played hollow knight right after it, so I enjoyed the white palace.

Actually the tired meme is the "white palace is just stupid I Wanna Be the Guy level sadistic difficulty" stuff. For lots of difficult platformer players it's just another fun part of the game that takes like 20 minutes.

White Palace is fair and if you can’t beat it you won’t have the skill set to beat the real boss and get the good ending.

A golden helix streaked skyward from the Helvault. A thunderous explosion shattered the silver monolith and Avacyn emerged, free from her prison at last.

WP would be a lot less tedious if the fade out and respawn from hitting spikes wasn't so dang long. Its pretty unobtrusive the rest of the game since spikes are mostly a thing you avoid but when they're the only obstacle around it stands out like a sore thumb.

The White Palace frustrated me a lot even though I'm experienced with platformers and the like, there were some moments that just wrecked me and I didn't know the Strats to get through or have infinite health because I was living in a vacuum for fear of spoilers. But looking back on it I appreciate the challenge of it now that it's behind me, and it let me see some pretty cool stuff in the end so it was worth it I think.

The middle of star road, once you found the alternate exit for all five star road levels. You get to this very weird zone with a black screen and if you beat all the levels something very strange happens in the mushroom kingdom.

SMW was an amazing game, everyone owned it so it was taken for granted but the game was just bananas.

It's not a meme, Hollow Knight has a great movement toolkit and feels amazing to control so I'm glad that the game has a serious platforming challenge to make you test your ability to make use of said toolkit.

Is white palace even as difficult as super mario world? Like sure PoP's final screen is downright brutal but the base one didnt even seem significantly more difficult than the queens garden platforming.

White Palace is, like, a mid-game Light World level in Super Meat Boy. There are also a number of sequence breaks that are less obvious but also much easier than the main route, if you're looking for them. It is a single toe dipped in the waters of actually-hard platforming.

e: which is not to say that White Palace is above criticism, retries/walkbacks should be even shorter and opportunities to heal should be built into the level design instead of requiring that you both know about and have a specific set of charms and also NOT use the other charm that is a horrible trap option that makes the experience worse.

it even sort of does the heal-by-level design thing (you can farm SOUL off the little floating kingbug things) but they're only available once you're like 2/3s of the way through the area and not for every step even then

but its difficulty is perfectly appropriate to its place in the game, and platforming in the abstract is good + fundamental to metroidvania gameplay

Did the flower escort quest on my replay. Didnt realize that you could preclear the path and as long as you don’t use a bench the hard enemies don’t respawn, just some easy trash mobs.
