There is a value to impeaching him again for the sake of the law. So if you only impeach him once on something that fits, but you leave the others out it appears arbitrary. That said being the only president so far to be impeached multiple times and shielded by his party is a major history black mark. Something that will piss him off forever, something that will always loom over the Republican Party and a rallying cry to fix poo poo.

Was going to reply about Javert and was surprised no-one had when I read that post, thank you.

e: Republicans and Libertarians hyperfocus on "they broke they law" (especially when it comes to immigration) because they think it excuses them from the moral implications of the situation. But if you point out that crossing the border illegally was a civil offense that generally resulted in a $10 fine while speeding tickets are much larger fines and they undoubtedly speed on a regular basis they have no response for that.

Please don't equate what Trump did with a crime of necessity. Crimes of necessity are often looked upon sympathetically especially with nonviolent offenders with a decent story and lawyer. At worst they run the risk of a light sentence, at best an acquittal by a sympathetic jury.

I am not equating what Trump did as a crime of necessity. It doesn't matter why you are stealing it is a crime. The reasoning doesn't matter the second you decide the break the law you have to be able to accept the consequences. Which if you are starving the option of being arrested and going to jail is worth it to be able to eat.

Trump has knowingly broken the law. Period. It doesn't matter what his reasoning was if you break the law you need to accept the consequences.

There is nothing to do with an a black or white sense of justice. Everything you do in your life you make a choice based on a variety of information. Like you decide to have an extra scoop of ice cream after dinner because you are craving it despite knowing you are going to have to put in extra work at the gym to make up for it. Or you don't just run into the middle of the street without looking because you know there is a chance you might get hit.

This is the same with someone who is committing a crime. Very few criminals are going to be able to say they didn't know what they were doing was illegal. They know what they are doing is not legal, you can have an argument on if a law is "right" or "wrong" that is an entirely other argument, but they chose to do it anyway. Be it doing illicit drugs, jaywalking, bribery, theft or murder. We live in a society governed by rules and laws. If we stop following these then we might as well openly declare anarchy and start up the Mad Max world already. I am fine with either but I'd like to know.

The Trump defense is like when a kid gets caught doing something and uses the defense of "Well Tommy did it too." You would get the response of "It doesn't matter if Tommy did it or not. Tommy isn't the one in trouble here."

It is incredibly disturbing that the defense of the president's crimes is no better than what a six year old comes up it.

People who commit crimes aren’t weighing up the sentences when they’re ‘deciding’ whether to break the law or not, djarum. They’re either not thinking about the consequences at all or simply think they won’t get caught.

There’s a reason ‘tough on crime’ laws fail so hard as a deterrent.

It wasn't even the first time he went on national television and confessed to a crime. It really is the fact that Trump went after Biden more than the fact that he keeps doing crimes that made the democrats finally move.

One way to maybe combat the hurricane of brazen bullshit lies coming out of the right wing would be to perhaps hold them accountable with libel or defamation lawsuits or whatever would be applicable.

Like if Judge Jeannie says Obama is a "danger to this country," that's just opinion, who cares. But if she says he's orchestrating a muslim overthrow of the government, then she needs to be asked for documentation or face some kind of censure or whatever. Hannity keeps insisting that Hillary killed Seth Rich? He'd better phrase that carefully as an opinion, or he'll have to show receipts. Preface all such "opinion" shows with huge disclaimers, and maybe even disclaimers after each commercial break.

We've almost completely lost "truth" and nobody seems willing or able to plant a flag and defend reality anymore.

Well, considering conservative hyper-chuds are being appointed at record rates, its less surprising that folks thing fair application of jurisprudence is a colloquialism and not an actual structural system with fairness/impartiality as its theoretical cornerstone.
