Well, Mayo Pete and PLANS! are their attempt to coopt the emerging left without actually changing anything, rather than go with a left-liberal platform.

there are a lot of 30something chuds who are immune to cognitive dissonance due to their parents indoctrinating them with foxnews garbage. how many times do you think any given highschool guidance counselor has had to hear the same idiotic "why is 'liberal arts' a thing?" quip each year, when it's time for the turds to migrate to college?

Part of my point is that Bernie at his leftiest is still only a left-liberal in truth. His program is far less encompassing than the Four Freedoms.

But then, what is the distinction in America between socialists like Bernie and AOC and left-liberals like Roosevelt? To what extent is the "liberal" insult meaningful in our particular context?

I identify as a liberal in exactly the Rooseveltian sense, which is pretty much that. I also identify as a social democrat otherwise.

this guy’s a chud but think more like (completely different nobody):

quote:

I made this video movie documentary. The goal of the film is to make you realize that movies are made to program the viewer to accept certain ideas that are designed to change behavior. This is done because certain agendas and ideas are easier accepted if someone is familiar with them. An example, future technology is put into movies ahead of time. When the technology is released, people are already familiar with it. An example I used in my movie was from Back to the Future II where flat screen TVs are present. Another example, from that movie, that I didn't use is where Marty's Asian boss is shown. The programming here is America's job's moving overseas to China

like that but not as completely loving stupid. Just stupid enough though. Think analyzing Terminator as Their plan to replace humanity or Moonraker being an admission to the Nazi off-world civilization. Just applying esoteric and conspiracy cultural analysis to films, and then assuming literalist and prescriptivist intent to whatever they depict.

Ah, I get what you're saying now.

I would respond by saying that the post WW2 economic and social order narrowed the political window between right and left in a way that is unprecedented in American history, and Roosevelt (I think you mean FDR but this is also true for Teddy) formed their ideologies in an era when the matrix of possible ideological positions was far wider than it is today and far wider than for which we have any real frame of reference.

FDR was absolutely in the left wing of his party, but he did not occupy a position analogous to Bernie or AOC today. There were people in his administration, Henry Wallace springs to mind, who were firmly left of him, as were other politicians of the time. That FDR would be left of Bernie today is more a damning indictment of our political culture than a damning indictment of Bernie or his politics.

I would quibble about calling Bernie left-liberal instead of a democratic socialist or a social democrat, as I personally consider that to be a liberal, one must inherently support capitalism so one cannot be both anticapitalist and liberal, but that's a semantic argument at most.

As to liberal being an insult, it's only an insult if you consider yourself left of liberal. I personally use neoliberal or shitlib in circumstances when calling someone out for cheering on capitalist exploitation, as it doesn't have the specific positive connotations that just plain liberal does for many.

For your particular identification, I would say that the meaning of liberal has evolved to a such a degree that self-identifying as a Rooseveltian liberal is likely to generate more confusion than it dispels. Whether you should identifying as liberal, I'd say it depends on whether you want to signal implicit support for capitalism, since that seems to be the way the word is evolving.

I'm just about old enough that I grew up when it was a particular kind of effective slur by the right, the sort that the Clintons ran from, before the shift to "progressive" or whatever. In truth I don't really think there's much distinction between left-liberal and social democrat, and liberal has greater historical significance in American society, because -- with militant socialists scaring centrists into behaving themselves, no question -- practically every worthwhile social reform since the first Roosevelt has been enacted by these left-liberals. I don't think it's helpful to run from that. We own the legacy.

"Liberal" as dirty word disowns both Roosevelts, and Truman and JFK and LBJ, and no matter how godawful they were in foreign policy, that's giving away half the game.
