Same. It's why I often just post fantasy stuff in the isekai threads because so much fantasy is just isekai anyway that nobody will really notice that half of the stories don't involve isekai stuff.

There are definitely isekai stories that are just "the creator clearly wanted to write a fantasy story and threw in a protagonist from another world." Faraway Paladin comes to mind even though I haven't read the novel so maybe it's more present there. And of course, there's the background element that lots of successful LNs come from amateur writers who started on WNs and found it easier to write a hero like themselves. But even when that isn't the case, it's natural that the hook fades into the background, since it's just an origin story. The hero is naturally going to make friends and meet people in the actual setting of the story, and readers doesn't care about their original family who got like two seconds of development. Like, Ascendance of a Bookworm takes the premise way more seriously than most of the other stuff I've read; Myne finds it hard to care about her "friends" and "family", characters are shocked and suspicious when she knows things she shouldn't, and so on. But by necessity by the end of the first book she belongs in the new world, not the old one. I think that's why the series where the isekai element works best are the comedies. Bakarina is a bunch of jokes about how Katarina takes the premise of the setting to ludicrous conclusions. Or like, the joke of Tanya the Evil is that everyone thinks Tanya is a bloodthirsty warrior but she's actually a corporate climber sent to war. It's a premise for light stories, not dark ones.

You might like this one which I've been wanting to post about but it's not an isekai at all just straight up fantasy (also I've been waiting for it to finish and it hasn't yet). Josei fantasy manga published in the 80s, 1 volume, finally has a translation being worked on. The art is really neat and it's got an interesting story, and should be completely translated before too much longer since they're putting out chapters at a good pace.

Except he's not conquering by killing humans, just taking over their towns and making them pay him taxes instead of their human lord. He's working towards a world where humans and demons coexist peacefully, and avoiding civilian casualties as a result of that goal. It might get bad later on, but right now it's decent. UNRELATED TO THAT!!!! I'm a Villainous Daughter, so I'm going to keep the Last Boss ended. It was a nice little fluffy story about an Isekai'ed girl seducing the demon lord. Short but fun. So nobody is tempted to read Dragon's Bloodline I'm going to spoil the ending because it's pretty wild: All story long the various super powerful super old characters and gods are really cagey about some great cataclysm that's going to happen. In the end it's revealed that there are too many worlds in the universe and every few thousand years two of them collide with each other and one has to be destroyed so the other can survive. And the world theirs is going to collide with next is...Earth! So in the end the main character and the other super-powerful characters have to fight all of Earth's gods to clear the way for one of the dragon gods to fly into Earth and commit suicide to blow it up. It's pretty easy except for the capital-G Judeo-Christian God who puts up a pretty good fight. (But before that China managed to land some soldiers on the magic world that just happen to kill one of the protagonist's friends, which causes her to get real mad and blow up China, killing two billion people and ruining their efforts to evacuate a few million people with technical knowledge from Earth to help improve magic world's standard of living. Nobody really cares or comments on this.) Earth gets blown up by the darkness dragon god, the protagonist becomes the new darkness dragon god, and everyone lives happily ever after. Except everyone on Earth, who are all dead.

Artificer posted:Villainous daughter: i cant believe the baddies seem to go unpunished??. Eh, not really? Lilia lost the holy sword so now she's no longer the sword maiden. Prince Cedric was replaced by his brother Prince Claude, which is a huge deal because Cedric has such an inferiority complex over his brother that we've seen several times. Marx isn't really punished because in the end he's small fry, and can plausibly use the excuse that he was simply following Cedric's orders. Also the best revenge is living a good life, and Irene's pretty much in 7th heaven. She's engaged to Claude, she has a successful business with her cosmetics, and is friends with all the monsters and the non-lovely humans.

Man I've got to catch up on that, it's been updating a bunch recently. The cast is so huge and everyone has their alternate self on top of that I never remember who is who when I come back to it after a long gap, so I've been thinking about giving it a re-read. It's really good though -- tbh I didn't even think about it being appropriate for this thread but it's actually perfect. For those not familiar it's sort of backwards to the usual setup because it follows a bunch of modern day kids who start remembering past lives in a fantasy world, and there's a mystery plot that slowly gets revealed in flashbacks to the past world plus a continuation of the war they were engaged in in the modern time as the old loyalties and conflicts get revived as their memories come back. One of the neat things it does is some of the characters including the MC are reborn in different genders from their previous lives and it addresses this in how the relationships between their modern selves and their past selves conflict and evolve.
