If anyone hasn't seen the HBO Chernobyl miniseries they should. Good drama and pretty much wall to wall terrifying nuclear OSHA nightmare fuel. I intended to watch one episode and ended up binging the entire 5 hours in one sitting.

We had to be reminded that yes, fire drills are mandatory. I think I said it before, but last time our fire alarm went off at work(it turned out to be a false alarm due to an issue with the sprinkler system, but still, it was in no way a drill), everyone calmly packed up their stuff and headed for the main entrance rather than bolting for the various side and emergency exits, because we all agreed it was "probably just a false alarm" and "i sure don't smell any smoke" and oh my god we're all so loving dead if the warehouse ever actually catches fire.

I was a fire marshall at my last office and any time the alarms went off I'd end up having to fully shout at at least one person to gtfo the building before they risked killing us both. People are dumb around fire.

I'm a floor marshall at my work too and I promise you half of these old fat bastards would rather risk dying in a fire than going down 12 flights of stairs for nothing. The flames would have to be licking their toes.

Fire evacuations are easy. When the alarm goes off the most important things are to save your work, look out the windows for a bit, and then get to the assembly area promptly, even if your route will take you outside and then back into another wing of the same building where the alarms are also going off because it's a lot shorter than following the driveway round and everyone else is already doing it. The second step is to start gossiping immediately RE:whodunit this time. Finally, also via gossip, figure out which missing employees are potentially trapped inside and which ones just went for lunch without bothering to sign out. (We also had a broken SMS warning system for a while so I came back from an outing, unlocked a few doors and walked to my office in the middle of a lock down drill, totally oblivious to the silence around me)

At first the fire damages on Kuznetsov were reported to be minor and just some cabling that was going to be replaced anyway. No harm done! As a surprise to no one, according to Kommersant that turns out to have been a big fat lie. quote:The damage caused by the fire on the Russian aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov” is effectively equivalent to the current value of the ship, at 95 billion rubles (around $1.52 billion), writes Kommersant, citing a source in the headquarters of Russia’s Northern Fleet. As an interesting aside, Forbes says the same could have - or more accurately already has - happened to US Navy: Fire That Scorched Russian Carrier Could Happen At U.S. Navy Shipyards, Too quote:It is far easier for American observers to dismiss the Admiral Kuznetsov fire as a Russian “thing”—just another consequence of Russia’s dysfunctional safety culture. But America’s shipyard safety record isn’t something to gloat over. Back in 2012, America lost a far more valuable asset, the multi-billion dollar attack submarine USS Miami (SSN 755), because a shipyard worker, eager to leave work early, set the sub on fire. How the hell do you put out a fire on a nuclear submarine?? Can you fill it with CO2? Anyway I love that USS Miami's motto was "First to fire. Twice to fire." The civilian contractor set two fires... edit: what a stupid question, I already own an accurate simulation of this Nenonen fucked around with this message at 14:33 on Dec 20, 2019 |

Mister Speaker posted:I'm looking for a GIF or video and this is the best place to ask. Near as I can remember, it's of three large power conduits that are wrapped in a helix, and because of... something to do with the current running through them, I want to say it has something to do with three-phase power, the cables are actually physically flexing around one another. Moving charges generate magnetic fields. Magnetic fields move charges. So the current flowing through the cable sets up a magnetic field that then moves the current flowing through the cables, and the cables along with it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biot%E2%80%93Savart_law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenz%27s_law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_force It's got nothing to do with three-phase power (except that with three phases then you've got a more complicated arrangement of fields); it applies with D.C. as well and would happen with a single conductor too. It's how railguns work, as well.

I was an RA in college, which meant evacuating residence halls, sometimes by myself, every time someone overfilled a washing machine and burnt a belt out. I'll grant that it's not likely for an ancient brick building to start on fire, but the number of kids who would try to hide in their closets so they could go back to playing the video game systems that they left on and in game as soon as the dumb blind RA would see there was no one in the room was remarkable.

I used to work in a SCIF and a major part of fire drills was discussing if we were allowed to use the side exits without getting a security violation. Also if it was worth it because we would have to walk all the way to the front of the building to get back in.
