Pretty much. For now, it seems China is perfectly content with pulling Central Asian states out of Russia's orbit into its own.

Yeah again you're preaching to a choir of mostly american leftists here and still coming off as privileged as gently caress Like let's take Kavanaugh, what kind of men do you think run "free" countries like Canada and France, the ones I know personally? Do you think they're different from Kavanaugh?

A heavily broken democracy is not the same thing as a dictatorship, in a not-very-important distinction that monarchies also use to define themselves as not dictatorships from being beholden to some kind of aristocracy. Not that sticking to that definition makes the map much more valid. I'm sure the Chinese definitely want to start a massive war over some of the most sparsely populated land on the planet.

Saladman posted:Are we looking at the same maps? The map that I thought you were referring to, KOGAHAZAN!!'s, is on a pixel grid and is supposed to be proportional in population, with 1 pixel = 500k people. In which case Alaska, at 700k people, would get 1 pixel (which it indeed has). ... It does not make PNG seem to have 3x the population as Australia, unless you're terrible at counting pixels? Australia has like 3x as many pixels as PNG, which is exactly proportional to their populations. The countries are proportional to population, yes. But it's random on if specific parts of the countries are. In Indonesia, Java is geographically proportionate to the other islands, but population-wise it should dwarf Western New Guinea. And Alaska is populationally proportionate to the lower 48, but geography-wise it should be much larger than it is. I never said PNG - I said Western New Guinea. The Indonesian side, which is scaled for a country of 270 million and not an island half of 4 million.

You could apply the same criticism to a whole bunch of countries. Like obviously Japan or the Philippines aren't scaled on an island basis either. The US is displayed differently because it's a noncontiguous nation that is also federated, while Indonesia, Japan or the Philippines are unitary states. OTOH you could argue that Malaysia, as a noncontiguous federated country is not treated equally to the US because the Borneo states are not proportionate to the mainland ones. steinrokkan fucked around with this message at 01:24 on Dec 23, 2019 |

If they're going to scale Alaska based on population, then they should also scale Western New Guinea based on population. Rightly, Alaska should be much larger on this map (and the lower 48 correspondingly smaller). It's just a peeve of mine when mapmakers make Alaska, French Guiana, etc. different entities from the larger part of their countries.

Well, I think it's fair to use different standards based on whether a given country is federated or unitary.... Unfortunately this map is not consistent in this regard either, so it's probably just a product of being made by one guy choosingexpediency over accuacy.
