The missus absolutely knocked it out of the park this year. Late last year i got invited to Government House to have lunch with the Governor of South Australia through work, and being, well, the queens representative in our state, it gives him a few privileges. Like having whatever you want on loan from the Art Gallery. He had the original oil of Hans Heysens 1929 "Patawarta: Land of the Oratunga" painting on display. Patawarta is a mountain in the Northern Flinders Ranges that overlooks possibly my most favourite place in Australia, a place I've been visiting since I was about 3 months old with my parents. Its a magnificent example of the ruggedness of the South Australian outback. I must have spent 20 mins just poring over the details in the painting, identifying the places I knew, where it was painted from... and havent stopped raving about it since then. So this year for Christmas, she got me a full sized canvas reproduction of it. We have to pick it up in a few weeks and get it framed, but I cant even begin to describe how giddy I am to have it hanging in my house. And in return, I bought her a chainsaw! I've got a pair of Stihl saws, an MS361 and an MS660, and neither of them are really appropriate for a 5'7 woman, and shes been bugging me for years about her having her own saw, so this year she got an MS180 of her own!

Merry Christmas, assholes! I worked all night. I even got high at work! ... as in walking on the top of some shelves, trying to organize backstock ("risers"). What, you think I'd do drugs at work? A coworker made a couple of hundred tamales - I put in an order for 24 of them, and he showed up at the store overnight with them. I'm looking forward to inhaling at least 18 of them in one sitting. DO NOT GET BETWEEN ME AND TAMALES. Elmnt80 posted:There wasn't poo poo for HEBs in arlington south ft worth/everman/forest hill/kennedale the whole time. There were a couple out east in the longview area that I'd go to when at my grandmother's house. I always wemt to Albertsons since they had the best salsa, alberts mexican hot sauce. There's still not - the nearest ones to Arlington are either in Hudson Oaks (just opened this summer) or Waxahachie. They have several Central Market stores around DFW though (and from what I've heard internally, it's probably gonna stay that way for awhile). No Albertsons in the Austin area... at least, not under that name. They operate as Randall's here - which are pretty much identical to Tom Thumb stores. Albertsons got ahold of them when they bought Safeway a few years back. DFW still has both Albertsons and Tom Thumb stores, but they closed all of the nice Albertsons stores ages ago, keeping only a handful of the really old, run down ones open. Amazon, Walmart, and Kroger all carry Albert's now, though it looks like only a handful of Texas Walmart stores carry it (according to the Albert's website).

mariooncrack posted:I saw a Saturn with Historical plates. I think it was a SC1. It was weird. I dunno how it works elsewhere, but in WI they're called Collector plates and I assume it's the same concept. They're probably a lot more expensive now, but if the vehicle registered to them was 20 years or older you just paid a few hundred bucks for the plate and then never have to renew it. With annual registration renewals being like $75, you see a lot of old beat up cars running around with Collector plates

Texas has another take, we have both classic and collector plates. One of them exempts you from safety inspections (pretty sure it's the collector plate), but you can (legally) only drive the car to/from car shows, mechanics, and wherever it's stored (home, storage facility, etc). The other is just another plate that happens to say classic.

It's the same here. Any car that's 25+ years old is eligible for historical plates. Most cars of that vintage haven't survived in my area though due to rust.

Here in Mass, it's antique plates. Over 25 years, only driven to shows, mechanics and place of storage. Thumbs down.

In Illinois, you can't drive the car in winter if it's got antique plates, unless you get a special exemption for events I get it, but it's just another way that Illinois is worse than most other states

Here, once your car's over 40 years old, it gets zero charge for road tax and doesn't need an MOT (annual inspection), but there are no restrictions on use. You can usually get cheaper classic insurance a lot younger than that too.

I want Christmas tamales STR. Those sound real nice. Christmas was cool. The kids could barely contain themselves. The five year old blasted through his gifts faster than anyone else. The two year old was soaking in every little thing he opened. The seven year old is still convinced that Santa is legit the real deal because he knows all the cool toys. I got myself a pocket knife and a tow strap and some D rings for the tow strap. It’s a shame I don’t have the truck to use them with now. Shopping for the replacement has been irritating. Merry Christmas to my favorite group of people on the internet.

I just got off a 24 hour shift, that I volunteered for, I'm sitting on the couch in my "Library" with a slight buzz, listening to a my roomate's Christmas present from me, a VNV Nation LP, playing on the old Zenith Allegro Record/8-track player I brought back from the dead a few weeks ago, along with setting up a nice sound system with a Sony amp and a couple nice Technics Monitors I picked up from Goodwill for $16, sounds pretty loving nice. Both Romio, the stray that lives in my crawlspace and Rosie have been fed a little extra for the holiday, although Rosie's special wet food is making my room smell like literal vomit. Still can't shake the generalized depression/anxiety I get around the holidays, dunno if it's 8 years of being deployed for the holidays, or my dad passing away right before the Holidays last year or what. It'll probably go away when I get to see my family later this evening, so it probably doesn't matter. I got presents wrapped well before I need to leave, so that's a nice departure from the norm. I really shouldn't complain, this weekend I'm leaving to go snowboarding in Tahoe for a week, essentially for free, and it sounds like my GF's family has lavished me with presents, despite the fact that I couldn't make it to their Christmas based on work schedule (again, voluntarily, I'll take the 24 hour shift over anyone that has kids). Tremek, GG, a lot of people give up on lovely people in their families/lives, because it's so much effort to deal with all this poo poo, time-wise/physically/emotionally, it's gonna make a big difference in those kids lives that you put forth that effort.

The holidays can be really complex. Socially, emotionally, personally. There's no easy way through it, and it's my least favorite time of the year. The good thing is that you seem to have a reasonable read about your situation, and that can help a lot. It's when people lose their perspective when things can get really nuts. Merry Christmas again, jerks, and take care of yourself and those around you.

Merry Christmas AI goons! Hope you all had a lovely day. I can feel the burn of chasing around 5 kids under 10 all Xmas. They were sugar high and me drunk. It was amazing cos the heavens opened up after months with some great rain! Then lightning struck at about 8PM and took out a power transformer so we 'camped' in the house. For presents I got some great preserves, some flights that suspiciously line up to a certain race later next year and a bike!
