Manga also had a hilariously off-model moment here which kinda ruined the serious nature of the scene I suppose that's one plus about the anime, but you lose out on the characters changing to suit the dialogue at moments - Louis pushing Legosi away when he's sniffing him after he leaves Haru's room was a bit more comedic in the manga

But drat only 2 or 3 episodes left and Beastars maybe my Anime of the Year. Studio Orange has done a stellar CG adaptation so far. yeah the fact we didn't get that scene at all really hurts the anime for me because the way it comes out of nowhere is such a shock and it shows that hey uh herbivores nowadays have a simple way to defend themselves from carnivores just thinking they can use physical intimidation. It really is an amazing character moment for Louis, to show he is not loving around if you think you can threaten him.

For what its worth as a non-manga reader though I do mouse-over the spoilers, I could see this being a big cliffhanger moment with the anime. If Louis is to inherent the lion mafia, I imagine a gun would be a big deal in a society of predator vs prey. This would suddenly make everyone equivalent as far as killing potential is concerned. Louis is very sensitive to his status as a prey animal and a gun would even that out. It would also reset his status between Legoshi, should it be brandished towards him, or Bill, as the manga suggests that there is some kind of struggle between the two that needs a definitive answer. While this is ultimately speculative between Legoshi and Louis, it would provide a good background in which they would fight over something like Haru or class rankings.

Oh my god, Beastars you are killing me with this cliffhanger. Haru's instinctive behavior is be consumed? What? That's a different twist than I was expecting. I remember her wanting to flee while sitting down to eat dinner with Legoshi because of his fangs, but the sudden leap into his mouth feels really out of left field. Why on earth would suicide by predator be a instinctive thing. Maybe she is trying to force the issue to see if he is really in love with her? I do love a good cliffhanger but ahhh! Well besides that, this episode was pretty awesome and an interesting setup into the finale. All the stuff at the love hotel was pretty sweet and awkward at the same time. It gave me flashbacks to my own furtive, awkward teenage years that felt genuine. Legoshi is just such a wonderfully awkward boy. Its hard not to enjoy and root for him. While I only quickly mouse-over the spoilers in this thread, Louie coming back to kill the boss was an awesome pay off to the stuff with his childhood. I have some hints at what is come next, so I'm excited to see it payoff. I also think it was handled nicely though the lack of PANDA! is curious. Outside of tying up various Yakuza, where did he go? I really dig the visual of the tower. It feels both western with the turret design and Japanese with the pagoda coming out of it. In general, the show is really great to look at but it's the little design choices that are great. Jack and the canine squad are great. I want more of them in every episode. The little Fennec climbing on the shoulders always gets a chuckle out of me. The little ghost of the beetle was also a cute moment. edit: Trying to be more mindful of spoilers Crazy Ferret fucked around with this message at 15:47 on Dec 20, 2019 |

I would be legitimately remiss if I did not mention how much I love the escalator metaphor in all its glory. What a great bit of both writing (There are so many floors I haven't gone through yet!) and visual storytelling.

Louis using a gun would've been better had they kept the earlier scene with Bill intact, because otherwise it's "Why is that a thing? Is this normal? Do they all do that?" The elevator was absolutely top notch and I'm glad they went all-in instead of keeping it chibi

Kung Food posted:It seems less instinct to be eaten, but more that mating with a wolf is so instinctively wrong her body made a sudden reaction to prevent it. That's not a bad idea. The longer I thought about it today, the more I think you might be right. An automatic action that seems insane as a way to "reset" and make you re-think what you are doing. Still, one hell of a image to end an episode on. Vinylshadow posted:Louis using a gun would've been better had they kept the earlier scene with Bill intact, because otherwise it's "Why is that a thing? Is this normal? Do they all do that?" This has been bugging me too. I cannot help but wonder where it came from? Some of the lions had them but they are a criminal organization so that made sense. With Louie, I keep asking where did it come from, why would he have one, is it tied to his inferiority complex? I live and grew up in Texas. Guns are commonplace sadly and I've been around them and their culture for most of my life. While no expert, I remember hearing that they are exceedingly rare in Japan. Even their implementation into the show seems a bit copy/pasted from our world. Louie, Legoshi, and Haru all have enough anthropomorphism going on to be human equivalent whereas the little squirrel or mouse characters would be committing suicide by trying to use one, or it would require a cute, if deadly, team effort to use one. There is a lot of world building evident in the fights with the show. Characters use teeth and claws naturally as it would be natural for them. The show has not gotten into the world's history too much so I imagine it may get exposition-ed out later on, but it still feels a bit odd. IIRC there's a hippo depicted amongst the carnivores in the flashback about Louis' past, or at least there is in the manga.

Biggest change I was most disappointed with in the rescue sequence! They cut Gouhin just pulling a fuckin' machine gun out of his back pocket when they part ways. There's one in ep 1 when the drama club advisor comes in to report on Tem's death, and the club have all split off into sides. The hippo is over with all the carnivores.

Well, that was a cute finale. Juno is a interesting kind of antagonist to set up. Now that they say they are getting a second season, I'm looking forward to see where that all goes. Her running after Haru is a great bit though. Legoshi continues to just be the most awkward. I get his reluctance to a point, but he seems a bit dense at times. Still, the ending was good and there is plenty of interesting plot hooks left to resolve. Man, what a fun show. Now to wait to see who gets cast in the NA version coming to Netflix and how well it does over here.

I guess that'd be quite the predator-prey relationship, eh? Granted, with how society evolves over time, that does seem to be the next logical progression, which then leads to the possibility of new hybrid animals - imagine Louis's dad's reaction if Number Four had bared fangs and ripped the carnivores to shreds

Legoshi's personality would not mesh with her at all and they'd be miserable for it. That said, I would be shocked if she did not end up with Louie after that scene and to serve as a foil for Legoshi and Haru's own burgeoning romance.

I'm glad Haru realised that's not a rabbit instinct and she's just weird like that. (I mean, Legosi is - appropriately enough - basically her world's version of a sexy vampire)
