Show was pretty good and lol at the totally not racist a few pages back complaining that Triss was 'race-swapped' when the actress is a white english woman of german descent.

I'm glad of the timeline fuckery as well as using minimal sign-posting for what's going on when. You don't need to understand what's going on when until it comes together anyway, and it makes for a much cooler second viewing. I feel like posting timestamps on the show would be a bit insulting. And whenever a viewer does see that there's multiple timelines, since there's clues even in episode 1, it crates a cool "a ha!" moment. And I think by the end of the season, everything fits neatly together. It's also pretty much what the book The Last Wish did. It had a "present" narrative all throughout, then the first short story (The Witcher) was the most recent, then the other short stories are thing that happened in the past. All of which had little to no timestamping. It just drops you in and boom! Geralt's on a cool new quest. I think the show nailed that vibe.

Alright, finished it with the wifey last night I give it: 6/10 for visual effects 6/10 for dialogue 4/10 for book adaption 7/10 for casting 3/10 for not having the dates at the start of scenes For a final score of: 9/10, cuz it's Witcher and it's totes watchable, as well as a big step up from the last attempt. Fugly Foltest, Fringella looking nothing like Yen, Wyvren dragons, and ball sack armor, yuck. But the main 4 are drat good, and their Yenn was way better than I anticipated.

Foltest grew on me. I much prefer the look and sound of game Foltest, but the dude in the show wasn't bad. He looked like a tired slovenly idiot when they first show him just eating while Geralt is talking. But when he's discussing "his child" and such, and shows up later on horseback, he doesn't kinda seem kingly at least.

Dragons being bigger and without the poison that Wyverns are known for having, and still in the draconid family along with fork-tails. There's no reason the two can't both co-exist in the show's version of the universe and still look different. The only thing similar is the "front legs are wings" thing.

I haven't read the books, have played all 3 games but that was awhile ago. For the most part I really enjoyed this, its not perfect but it could have been far worse. Maybe not having read the books, but still going back and reading quite a bit of the lore helped me from making direct comparisons like being annoyed at changes to Cahir for example. I guess with complaints about his character and the like I can understand but also willing to see how it develops ... they could be going for more of an arc with people like that which change over time to reflect more of how they are in the books? Same with things like more Witcher-lore explanations. I think they missed a golden opportunity to showcase a Witcher in full monster-hunter preparation mode before the Striga fight. More beast investigation, more potion brewing etc. But it still doesn't bother me as much because as others have pointed out - that could very well happen in season 2 at Kaer Morhen. I think my biggest complaint is one that's been raised here which is they could have cut Ciri's story right down and given Geralt's and Yen's more time to breathe. She was spinning wheels a bit. Or at the very least show us a bit more of her life in Cintra before the attack. One thing I haven't quite understood is in ep 5: I'm aware of the wish and that Yen and Geralt are tied together - that mission where they find the Djinn in Witcher 3 is incredible. But I am not quite clear on how they are tied together. Is it known exactly what Geralt wished for? I always thought he wanted to save Yen and so he basically outright said that, but the Djinn took his words and twisted them and somehow made it about them being bound together. A sort of Gaunter O'Dimm type of trickery. But what would Geralt have said that could be twisted like that? Its hard to turn "I wish for you to leave Yen alone/stop fighting her/stop killing her" into "I wish we were bound together forever". So maybe what Geralt said was less direct and it was less twisted by the Djinn and more he did outright ask for them to be bound together? Which seems like an odd thing to wish for in an emergency with Yen about to die. Also on episode 5 I might be totally misremembering the game, but is there a chance the doppler is Dudu? Or at least a nod to him? From memory Dudu has a scar across his face and this doppler got face slashed. Is Dudu a book character at all too? I assume its just a coincidence or at the least a nod and not actually him. But still made me wonder

Basically the djinn can't kill her because he can't killer Geralt, so he fucks off, and then in the books Yen is like "you've condemned yourself to me". It's not a love wish. It's just fate tying to keep her alive in the moment because he's smitten with her and she saved Jaskierlion.

I think that because Geralt is tied to Ciri (Law of Surprise) and is also tied to Yennefer (Last Wish) then Yen is also tied to Ciri. It's math.

The "Dear Friend" letter is loving awesome, because it's exactly how a petty/lovely ex-girlfriend would talk to you. It's not an example of the most exquisite writing ever, it's an example that when people read it they go "oh gently caress, I've had this ex!"

So picked up Witcher 3 for the stupid low price of 14 bucks including all the DLC. The game is so far hilariously good I like the fact I can do a quest but make sharp left turns in decision making so it's not just kill the beast, or you can outright ignore some stuff because gently caress it you weren't paid to handle it. One difference from the show is that it seems people hate you a lot more also I don't think the show will do The Bloody Baron quest where you have to deal with a miscarried monster baby, oh yeah I thought once you buried the botchling and made it a Lubberkin that you know it would not look like a demented monster baby. Nope now its a spectral kermit the frog muppet baby monster floating around guiding you to the Baron's family. All the while I'm following it on foot and the guards that are out that see it start going "Oh what the gently caress" which is a great touch.

That's true, and from that point of view I can make sense of it - a simple wish like "leave Yen alone/don't kill Yen/stop fighting Yen" could be what gets twisted by the Djinn. So its less about him being hosed around by the Djinn and more about him making sure the Djinn doesn't gently caress around and find a loop hole to still cause harm to Yen.

As far as I know, CDPR has not licensed any of their original work in the games for Netflix to use. So it's not just a matter of "the show probably won't go into the games" as much as it is "that absolutely will not happen". They do lift some cinematography straight from the game into the show though.

The first two or three have a diff translator than the rest, and the later ones are better. But the series' writing strengths are less in the prose and more in the world and characters.
