Whooo, that was a great season finale. A few things that the thread saw coming, a few that we didn't. Also a bunch of things got cleared up (including THE loving DARKSABER) but other things have been left for next season.

It's been real interesting watching how much chatter there's been online around The Mandalorian vs Rise of Skywalker. The Google Trends charts are quite telling:
The last 3 months: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&geo=US&q=mandalorian,baby%20yoda,rise%20of%20skywalker
The last 7 days: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=now%207-d&geo=US&q=mandalorian,baby%20yoda,rise%20of%20skywalker
The chatter around RoS had a much bigger spike around the premiere date but petered out pretty quickly, chatter around The Mandalorian has been at a fairly constant level since it started back in November and has now overtaken RoS again. Whooops, sorry but no one is talking about your $275 million dollar movie any more ....

We needed a good time palette cleanser after that. I hope the good will stays around for another week or so, and the Faviloni train gets a to enjoy the well earned praise without a shitpile of movie anger burying it.

That was incredible.Enough of the crazy finale stuff was earned that the bonus stuff like character info dumps or the loving Darksaber didn't break the credibility bank. It's hard to pick out anything in particular to react to, since I want to just gush about everything. I'll call the music out though, that was a solid Moriconne homage.

i thought that last ep was kinda lame, good guys just overcoming constant overwhelming odds not with style or guile, just their significantly less weapons and plot armour. resounding meh. oh well, got more entertainment than I expected out of a star war show

It's a minor thing, but the books really go all-in on giving as many alternate words for earth things as they can. Hackers become slicers, bathrooms become refreshers, and so on. I was a bit sad that the Mandalorian didn't go quite as far asthey could with that, and using words like "oh my god" is one example of that. I guess it's better to use language that sounds natural to the 98% or so of people watching who aren't way deep into the books though.

I guess so. At a pinch, I can't really think of a starwarsy equivalent either. "By the Force" wouldn't sound right, as practically nobody believes in or has even heard of it. And I'll take "oh my god" over "kark", "kriff" or "sithspit" any day.

Everything about this episode filled me with joy in a way that the past movies didn't even come remotely close.

Dave Syndrome posted:

The biker scouts having their discussion had me giggling as well, but them constantly missing the target was a bit too much. Also one of them goes "oh my god" at some point, which sounded a bit too earthly to me. Nonetheless they deserved what they got for hitting baby Yoda.

I noticed it as well but it doesn't bother me too much, but early on the mechanic lady in the sniper episode said "geez" and let's not forget Han's good old "Then I'll see you in hell!".

The Jedi seem to be forgotten at this point, and religion is a thing in Star Wars. We kinda knew they were treated as a myth in the backwater planets by the time of ANH and since then it looks like it got worse, so the expression seems fine. A bit uncanny in-universe, but fine. To be honest I kinda prefer those little things that bring the show closer to a traditional western with some fanservice than just a full-blown star wars lore stravaganza.

The way this show uses things in just the right dose got me excited for the Darksaber reveal at the end, something that I never cared about.

I've been waiting for a western/kurosawaesque star wars again since, well, star wars.

Well, not waiting. Just wishing.

And then I'd have to consider the fact that even if I got one, it would suck.

I still can't believe all stars aligned to give me this.

Mmmm,
You smell like Lysol Wipes.
Well this has been a great day. Went to the late show of RoS expecting it to suck but I didn't want it to be the only SW movie I haven't see in a theater. I had low expectations because I read the spoilers and Abrams has only made two movies that aren't garbage, and I was shocked that this one was solid and my just be my third favorite after ESB and ANH. Seriously if anyone is avoiding it (which is understandable if you've heard about the story on paper) just go see it. Everything works just fine in a movie about space wizards, unless your joyless and empty and on the hunt for space racists hiding between the lines of dialog. Then I stayed up to catch the new episode and RoS got dropped to fourth place by the end of the opening scene with the Scout troopers. This show is so much better than I could have imagined, and the icing on the cake is the rumor that Favreau is going to be overseeing the franchise into the future. Also, Taika Waititi Should be hired to direct everything ever.

I'm pretty sure that if the Mandalorian blacksmith down in the sewers had seen that Moff Gideon had the Darksaber she would have gone "Forget all this broken-rear end armor and forget your mission to save the child, killing that fucker and taking back the Darksaber is now our #1 immediate priority GO GO NOW"
It's pretty much the Mandalorian equivalent of Excalibur

That was such a fun little story there, of course a Hutt would try to recreate the Deathstar cutting literally every corner. I must again sing the praises of Star Wars books, both Legends and the newer canon ones. I never read the ones that apparently got super insane, as opposed to just fairly insane with extra-galactic bio-tech aliens invading, but I never read one and thought "that was lame".
