I'd say it's because of social media diluting the "hangout" charm of most comedians. Most of them could coast on a concept without needing to follow through in the 80s and 90s, but now that the internet is full of bite-size comedy in every conceivable form, a comedy movie actually has to be a good movie and most of them aren't up to that challenge.

Lord and Miller seem to be the only consistent big budget comedy writers/directors at the moment. Comedies are still recovering from the 00s Apatow curse of "we don't actually need a script. Just improv for 15 hours and we'll piece a movie together out of it."
